So I posted here a couple of days ago regarding my kitten, Lincoln. She has a pretty bad URI, and it’s turned into a “slight” case of pneumonia (never thought pneumonia could be slight, it always sounded so serious!). But she was fine for a couple days after the antibiotics, running around, eating like a horse (gained a lb. in a week!), and pretty much acting like a kitten! BUT, after her vet visit on Saturday, she came home and all of a sudden could barely breathe through her nose! She kept trying, and never got to the point where open mouth breathing was all she was doing, but she looked miserable! Wouldn’t eat, drink, and moved a lot slower. I force fed her a couple syringe full of wet food yesterday (the one and only time I’ll do that, she wouldn’t look at me for hours!), and judging by her gums (pink), she was getting enough oxygen, and also was not dehydrated, but her breathing really worried me. :/ So I took her in early this morning, and the vet decided to keep her for just the day, pump her with a strong needle-full of antibiotics, fluids, and force feed her some! SHe got an X-Ray which showed fluid in the right lung, and the vet showed me. She said she was worried, but not to the point where she was thinking life or death. I guess that’s a good thing? She loved going to the vet at first, but I have a feeling she’ll change her mind after today. Haha.

Anyways, THE REAL POINT OF THIS post is to get some positive feedback. Has anyone ever had a cat or knew of a cat that went through this and made it? I just want to know my little girl is going to be ok! Anything would help.

The vet sounds like a good one, someone who will do all she can for your little one. Stay strong,, Sending purrs…

I don’t think the vet would tell you that it wasn’t a life and death situation if it really was that serious. I suspect the vet wants you to realize that it could become a much worse illness without proper care.

I don’t remember ever hearing about a cat with fluid in their lungs, but I do know that kittens/cats can be very sick and pull out of it just fine, especially if the vet is keeping a good eye on her.

I know it’s hard not to worry, but it sounds like the vet is doing a good job.

Sounds like you have a good vet, remember that she probably won’t want to eat since they use smell when eating their food. Her poor little nose is stuffed up so that makes it more difficult.

My Leela didn’t have pneumonia, but she was really sick about a year ago. It took 3 different types of antibiotics, an iv drip and 5 days in the hospital, but she made it! Once cats can’t smell their food, they won’t eat.

I just took her to the vet a few weeks ago because there was some gook in her nose. Caught it before she got stuffed up; I knew she would stop eating then, and the problem would present much worse. It was worth the expense.

Here’s hoping vet’s care will get little Lincoln back on her paws in no time!

It sounds as though she is in the right place, where they can give her the care she needs. I hope she recovers quickly.

Here is a link to an article about pneumonia. Warning- it may scare you! So you may not want to read it. But I am including it in case you are like me and prefer the known to the unknown (I have quite a good imagination and can conjure up plenty of nightmarish scenarios!) http://www.vet.cornell.edu/fhc/healthinfo/pneumonia.cfm

I have force-fed Polly on multiple occasions. And Zappo, who lived to the ripe old age of 19, once or twice. Yes, they hated me temporarily (and so did my husband, who saw me as torturing a sick and miserable cat). However, if cats don’t eat for as little as 48 hours, they can develop liver failure. And although I knew I was not giving them enough calories as they mould consume normally, every calorie I got in them was energy to fight the illness. So if you can, and she is not eating some warmed food, or even a little KMR or goats’ milk (Even though she is weaned, she might still like milk and drink it more regularly. When Polly (9yrs) was ill she drank milk better than she would eat cat food. And it has protein, fat, all that good stuff.), I would try and harden your heart and keep up the syringe feeding. She will forgive you. (Polly is sleeping on my pillow again now that it is getting cold. No grudges.)

Tequila has had pneumonia twice. It sounds horrible, but with the right treatment they recover quickly. Fluid on the lungs is normal for pneumonia, but it has to be monitored carefully.

The most important thing my vet told me when i took her home (she spent 3 days in hospital) is to keep her inside in a room with a constant temprature. And to steam her twice a day – I dont like wasting water by running a shower, so I put her in her carrier, got a big bowl of boiled water, set it some distance away from the front of the carrier, and covered it all with a large towel. I’d leave her like that for 2 minutes. And then she also had a weeks worth of antibiotics to take at home. Just watch out for a cough – any kind of cough would indicate that the pneumonia hasnt cleared up yet.
