Polly’s Mum, I’m not as rare as KapitiKats (I’ll deal with you later sis), yes it is disappointing the All Blacks are out of the cup but the world will keep on turning, the sun will rise on another day. Most people I talked to about the rugby were very philosophical about the loss and weren’t donning sack cloth and ashes. We also have Bathurst 1000 V8 racing today, an annual race held in Australia which pits Holden against Ford to the delight of Australian and New Zealand fans. Yes, FORD won and came second and third.

I’m bummed too that the Scots lost. I think the best I can hope for is for Argentina to go all the way, then let Johnny & Co. kick butt and take names like it’s 1982. Give us Prince Andrew in a helicopter, and we’re all set!

Ginny! How do you come to be a Rugby fan! Are you English? Falklands deja vu,huh?

Actually, Asterix made me a rugby fan! Asterix is a best seller everywhere BUT the United States. I first encountered those brilliant French comics in my high school French book, and when I visited DC for the first time the summer after graduation, I bought a copy of “Asterix in Britain” and read it until it fell apart (the climax of the comic takes place at a rugby match).

Hubby brought into the marriage a whole library of Asterix comics in Spanish, and I picked up a lot of the language that way. (“Estan locos, estos romanos!”) Then I discovered Amazon.com…HEAVEN!

Oh, yeah, rugby…Asterix started it, Fox Sports World cemented it! There was a wonderful British pub (complete with butler at the door!) in Dunedin, FL near my old home. We loved going there to watch rugby with the ex-pats from all over the former Empire. Rugby goes great with Scotch eggs, or bangers and mash, and especially with Newcastle Brown Ale! Don’t forget to finish with a fried Mars bar or some treacle tarts!

I think it would be more fun to watch than American football, which except for my local highschool team, I can’t get into. Blessings to those who are hooked but watching a game on tv reminds be of a bar game of foosball. Boring! Now Rugby strikes me as something you can really watch and follow the action. I hope to find a way to watch the semifinals next weekend.

It’s much more fun than American football. For one thing each half only lasts 40 minutes, and apart from breaks for injuries (when the clock is stopped) play is continuous. And then they don’t wear those silly helmets, so you can see the players faces (the scrum-caps just stop them getting their ears torn too badly) and they aren’t padded/armoured, so you actually see the player, not a sort of expanded tech. version of the player. The rules are a bit complicated, but the ref. wears a mike so you can usually hear why he has made his decision – and then scream at him because he got it wrong!

    Rugby world cup joke:

What’s the difference between an Aussie and a teabag?

The teabag stays in the cup longer!

Asterix & Obelisk books ROCK! Yay for Dogmatix, Geriatrix & Co!!

Good joke Polly’s Mum – Chris didn’t get any aussies in today, how’s your aussi colleague, keeping a low profile?

    Positively under the carpet!

I love the puns in Asterix. Although it was written in French, for once the translation is better than the original. I love the Roman Marcus Ginantonicus, the druid Getafix, the bard Cacophonix etc.

Rugby was bigger in the 80’s. My older brother played for Nashville’s team. I used to go to the Rugby tournaments in Louisville as a teen. My brother made me promise to never, ever accept an invitatio to a Rugby party. Apparently they are quite wild and no place that he wanted the kid sister to be. Go England. Beat France!

No, no, no! It’s Trubadurix, Akvavitix, Aladobix (the chief), Senilix, Idefix (the dog) and so on…

    Excellent entertainment indeed!

I may have to smack your nose for that cartoon, Miu!

One of the things I love most about the English translation of Asterix is the names of the characters. I think Dogmatix is funnier than Idefix, and Getafix for the druid who prepares a magic potion and distributes it to his whole tribe is just brilliant! If you prefer the general European names (Troubadix etc.) I will not argue with you, after all it’s a matter of opinion and also of personal sense of humour.

Good joke Pollys Mum, I can say that tongue in cheek, we stayed in the cup just a tad longer than the Aussies. (smiles wryly)

I prefer the Spanish “Ordenalphabetix” (Alphabetical Order) to the English Unhygenix, and their name for one of the Roman camps “Pastelarhum” (in English “Rum Cake”) to whatever they call it in English.

My favorite Roman names? Encyclopaedicus Brittanicus and Crismus Bonus

Also, I loved the comics section of the Egyptian papyrus in a panel from “Asterix and Cleopatra”: Pnuts, Ptarzan, etc. and the name of one of the Egypian sailors: Setthisbackup.

A great pun: one to groan on!

    #69285

Yes, I love Crismus Bonus too, and all the Egyptian names. I love the “British” names as well – McAnix etc.

Some of you ladies interested in rugby might like the pictures at this site: http://www.rouvre.com/main.php?lang=en – click on ‘enter’, hover your cursor over ‘work’, then click ‘broken faces’ – it’s a series of portrait photos taken immediately after games in France.

    These men are tough.

Thank you Kittenmaster, a wonderful set of pictures.

You only have to watch the men on the field refusing to go off despite numerous injuries to realise just how tought they are.

Count down to Saturday has begun. Kick off 8.00 pm UK time.

That’s 1pm CST–uh, oh; prime time for NCAA football! I guess I’ll have to catch the rebroadcast.
