This is the story: we have raised around 3 litters of kittens from a stray that lives in the neighborhood, we are on the 3rd now. In the others we had no problems raising them and finding homes from the age of 2 weeks on up. This last batch has had more than a few issues. There are 2 males and 1 female. The female is doing great, eating, thriving and gaining weight. The males, not so much.

We have treated them all for fleas and wormed them. Now, the males seem to be having an issue with anemia. The first one started on last Sunday with what the vet thought might be hypoglycemia, we did as she said, gave him honey on the gums and he bounced back. Not so much now as is the case with his brother. We have done reading and it does seem like it could be anemia since the gums are pale, the breathing is as described in everything we have read.

My question is this: is there a brand of iron supplement that we could use on these kittens? We really can’t afford to take them to the vet to have blood tests. Any help would be appreciated.

By the way, the kittens are maybe 3 weeks.

is there any way you can catch this stray and have her spayed before she breeds again ???

We are working on that at the moment. We are borrowing a live trap so hopefully in the next few days we will have caught her.

Thank you for the idea of chicken livers, would we cook them first?

Raw will be fine for the cats. You may feel better about cooked.

Get some nutrical (sold at pet stores) or some Lixitinic (from the vet). These are both vitamin supplements and will help anemic cats. It takes a long time for them to recover (mine is going on two months now and he had a transfusion too). Most important is to make sure the fleas and worms are under control as those make the anemia worse. This can be life threatening so keep close eye on them.
