Does anyone know how to prevent freezer burn? I don’t freeze meat much but there are a couple of good sales on meat right now and I would like to get them. The problem is every time I freeze something I end up getting freezer burn and it goes in the garbage. What am I doing wrong?

I just end up buying the freezer bags and they seem to work, but I am sure there are other methods, I do go through the meat quite fast, so I am sure that helps.

My son-in-law swears by the freezer bags that have a device to suck all the air out of them.

I buy meat in bulk, put a meal’s worth into a small freezer ziplock bag, then put 4-5 of those bags into a larger ziplock. Then I put the whole thing into a tupperware type of container. That works pretty good.

Petpntr…….The culprit to freezer burn is air getting to the foods. I freeze alot…soups, casseroles, meats, chicken, stock, etc. For meats or chicken, I wrap each piece individually in plastic wrap, then place in a large freezer type bag, removing all the air. Have never had a problem with freezer burn with that method. There’s also a product out that will seal foods airtight in bags. The name escapes me. Though, I would be inclined to wrap the foods also, prior to sealing. Sometimes I wrap in plastic wrap, then wrap again in heavy duty foil, not using a bag at all. It’s also a good idea to date and indentify the contents. Hope this helps.

Thanks guys for the suggestions. I guess I need to buy some freezer and zip lock bags. I seldom needed to freeze anything but with the costs the way they are recently I decided it might be a good idea to take advantage of some of the sales, especially on meat. So I will try all your suggestions and see if I have better luck than I have had before.

The best bet is to seal as much air as possible out of the bags. The next best bet is to have a freezer with manual defrost only, no automatic defrost.

I swear by my Foodsaver. It is one of those vacuum sealers and it is wonderful. I buy meat whenever it is on sale and I haven’t had anything get freezer burned. I also put up a lot of fruits and vegetables this year to have this winter. Mine came with a video to show you how to use it. My sister uses the ziplocks that you can suck the air out of and has had good results with that as well.
