I have to do the sub-q again tonight. I tried this morning, but the needle was too small and Rotley was very upset with the time it was taking. He tolerated the needle well, but after 7 minutes he was very stressed and squirming, nad he just wanted OUT OF THERE.

No. 21 needle is too small to transmit the fluid in a timely manner.

Back to no. 18 needles, which are ouchy.

Oh, please, Lord. I feel like a brute and a failure.

You are doing fine Emma,I had similar problems. As long as you let Rotley go when he is super stressed he will still trust you. I know you probably are already but give him extra smooches and treats, maybe wait a little while before the next SQ. You know the 18 gauge works, stay calm and the next time will probably go fine. I just wanted to make sure that you know that lifting the fluid bag higher makes it go faster. Experiment and see what Mr Rotley tolerates best.

BC is right Emma…you are doing fine. Do NOT beat yourself up…it takes practice, like anything else.

and BC is right again about the height of the bag. How are you doing that? We have a fridge with a freezer on top. The bag would be tied to the top handle, and Brain was put on the kitchen table, in the bottom of a cat carrier, surrounded by towels. That was to comfort her, keep her sort of in the one place, and to soak up any squirts or blow-outs! Brain wasn’t very big, so that helped, and my husband poked himself plenty of times. You need to stay calm, and try again, and Rotley will get used to it.

as the Kiwis say, Kia Kaha (if that’s right!)…stay stong and you will get better! *you can do it, you can do it*!

You are doing what you need to do for Rotley. Breathe and know it is a learning process and that because of the loving bond all will be okay.

Oh, thanks all of you! I picked up the size 18 needles at lunch time yesterday, and I did the sub-q again last night. Although Rotley did NOT like it and squirmed a good bit, we got it done. Getting stuck twice in 14 hours was not pleasant. Rots was in a bit of a snit for about an hour, but he polished off his ice cream and then snuggled with me all night long.

I took the little fellow to the vet’s this morning for his 6-week checkup and he was trembling badly. His BUN and crea levels are just about the same as last month, so he is holding his own, and he does not have anemia.

There is hope for more time, and that’s enough to make me happy.

As for the sub-q, I hang the bag over the top of the medicine cabinet door in the bathroom, and the towel-wrapped Rotley is placed in the vanity sink which is full of blankets. This way, there is a small and soft depression for him to cuddle into. The top of the bag is about 3.5 feet higher than the surface of the vanity, so I will try to raise it about a foot higher. That should help.

But nothing helps us get through this as much as you dear people!

Sending continued prayers for you and Rotley, Emma. I know how difficult and stressing for both cat and human this can be as I had to do it for Sam. And although I sometimes accidentally hurt him, he was loving and forgiving, as I’m sure Rotley is, too.

Tomorrow morning I do the sub-q again. A few prayers would be most welcome!

By the way, with these new foods, etc.,Ruggles is gaining weight: 1.5 lbs so far, and little Rotley is holding his own.

    Thanks!
