I have a 9 week old kitten who can’t breathe and dont know what to do. I wont be able to get hi to the vet til next week due to finances and I dont know if he is going to make it til them. I have tried everything I can think of and its not helping. He is my baby and it is breaking my heart to see him go through this.

Is he congested? Describe why he can’t breathe? Sometimes if their nose is stuffed up it helps if you go into the bathroom, sit on the toilet and run a hot shower while you hold him and the room steams up. Other than that it sounds like your kitten has to go to a vet or he won’t make it. Please call around and see if a vet will work with you.

4KM, I wish we could help but we are not vets. I agree with BC, please try to get kitty to a vet, ring round and see if you can find one with a payment plan or who will let you give him a postdated cheque or something. Maybe you could even offer to do some unpaid work for him/her in exchange for an appointment, clean some cages or something. Otherwise, you could try ringing a shelter for advice. In the meantime, BC’s advice about the hot shower is well worth trying.

The http://www.messybeast.com/handrear.htm website is very good for advice and this is what it says about respiratory distress in kittens:

    RESPIRATORY DISTRESS

Respiratory distress is a symptom of many conditions including infection, aspiration pneumonia, near drowning, shock, heat stroke, fluid in the chest cavity. Irregular or shallow breathing indicates serious illness. Unless you can immediately identify and treat the cause e.g. treat heat stroke, seek veterinary advice immediately.

Respiratory problems may also be due to obstruction of airways e.g. with discharge from an infection, swelling from an injury, inhalation of clumping cat litter. If the obstruction is immediately obvious and visible you may be able to remove it yourself by bathing the nasal area. Obstructions inside the nose or windpipe require veterinary treatment. Some short nosed breeds may show respiratory signs related to their altered facial proportions.

Nasal discharges indicate various problems. Pus indicates an infection or foreign object inside the nose. Trickles or bubbles of milk indicate cleft palate. A bloody discharge may indicate serious lung problems and, unless the blood is obviously from a superficial wound, bloody nasal discharge requires immediate veterinary attention.

I wish we could help more.

He is all congested and I can hear wheezing when he breathes. I am going to try a few vwts tomorrow to see if they can work with me, if I had more then 20 bucks in the bank I would have went to the ER already. His brother was sick last week but we cleared everything up with a homeopathic remedy, unfortunatly it doesnt seem to be working on Diablo. There is no bloody discharge and he only stopped eating and drinking today. I have him in the bathroom with the shower running right now. Hopefully it will help him at least til tomorrow morning.

We got them from a lady that rescued them, I actually just found out that this medical credit card I have a joint account with my mother with can be used at vets. I am gonig to see if I can find one that accepts it. I just got him to eat a little while ago so I am going to be up with him most of the night to make sure my baby is OK.

That’s great news and I hope that by tomorrow, your little one has turned the corner to come back to health.

He may not want to eat because he can’t smell right now with the congestion. Hope that you can get some help for him {{{hugs}}} Diablo and yourself.

That’s true, Deb, I didn’t think of that. 4KM, try warming his food gently — it makes it more appetising and easier to smell. Also try offering him some ‘smellier’ food, such as tuna, that might help. You could also try Gerbers chicken baby food (pure chicken, no additives, no onion or garlic) and warming that gently too. Thanks, Deb.

jcat, just remembered because I had to do that with Kinker, when he got sick he lost a lot of his smelling capabilities.

After I kept him in the bathroom with the shower running last night he started to eat a little bit, I woke up this morning his chest congestion seems a little better. My husband gave him some vitamin C last night and used this applew cider vinegar remedy which seems to be helping already. He is a little perkier today so I will take it one minute at a time.

That’s really good news, 4KittiesMommy. I hope you find a good vet who will take your medical credit card. Remember to mention Diablo’s brother too — if Diablo needs antibiotics, it may be that his bro will need them as well, to make sure the infection is gone or that no secondary infection gets hold. Hope both your boys get better soon, is that them in your avatar? They look gorgeous!

LOL, I know the feeling. He is my little angel but they are all good kittens. I havnt had ny problems with them other then their health the past couple of weeks. the good thing is they are all fighters. I just love how they take care of each other. My female though is a fiesty little thing, she is a peach and white long hair with these big blue eyes. i am very lucky with them and they are my spoiled little babies.

Diablo seems to have some of his spunk back today and his breathing seems to be getting better as the day goes on. Dopey on the other hand is taking a turn for the worse. I have been informed by the vet that his respiratory infection is at severe stages and we will have to hospitalize him if it doesnt get better by the end of the weekend. I am going to have to handle this with an open mind. I honestly dont think he is going to make it through the weekend.

I’m sorry to hear that, hopefully Dopey will surprise you. Do you have any antibiotics for him? One of the kittens I raised had a very bad upper respiratory infection and needed antibiotics for a while but he pulled through and is a beautiful healthy kitty.

    Good luck.

Could the vet maybe switch his med to another antibiotic? And hopefully without you bringing Dopey in? Sometimes a change in antibiotics helps. I don’t know where in the country you live but I’ve had my vets give me scripts to fill at Publix to get antibiotics for free or at Target or Walmart for $4.

I know sometimes nothing works but I just wanted to let you know about the antibiotics if you don’t already know. Thanks for working so hard for these babies.

It has been a rough few days but I found someone who deal with rescue kittens who may be taking the brothers for treatment until they get better. She is going to let me know today. Otherwise I am going to have to bring them to a kitten rescue to see if they can help them. It breaks my heart but right now I need to do what is right for them. On the brighter side, we just got a lab puppy and they love him to death.

That sounds good 4KM,taking care of 4 very sick orphans is incredibly time consuming and expensive. I’m glad you found someone with more experience. Thanks for rescuing them.

The kittens are doing phenominal this week, Dopeys eye is open again but I think he has gone blind in that eye due to the severity of the infection. He is playing again, eating and back to his crazy old self. Diablos eye has cleared up, no more tearing and third eyelid is gone. He lost alot of wait but he is eating again and getting back to his old self. Dibbles had a little cold but it has cleared up and Princess Snow Belle is prissy as ever with a little red in her eye but she is doing fine. We introduced our babies to a new puppy and it has been interesting.
