Hello i wanted to get your opinions and advice of my kittens recent odd behavior. She is 5 months old and for about a week everytime she goes to poo she sits on it. It’s really frustrating because after every poo she needs a wash. I don’t know if she does it because I’m watching her or if something is wrong. Right now she went poo and after she finished she didn’t even bother moving. She just layed right there on top of the poop. So i had to wash her because her entire legs were covered in poo and her stomach. When i first got her she was 8 weeks and had no trouble going to the bathroom. She would poop and come out clean no smears or anything. It was like over a month ago that each time she goes she comes out dirty. I don’t understand why the older she gets the more dirtier she is becoming in the litter box. Aren’t cats suppose to be grossed out by their poo? This one doesn’t mind sleeping on top of it and being covered in it. Now every time she goes poo its a nightmare for me and her. She gets rinsed and i get to clean the whole bathroom and clean myself as well. I thought maybe she was getting too big for her box and i bought her a bigger one and things became worse. Please help why is she doing this? Is something wrong with her? I don’t have the money to go to a vet right now unless its an emergency. Thank you.

Most times when cats do this they are insecure, afraid, or are hiding in their litter box. It smells like them and if it’s one with the cover, it makes them feel safe. If things have changed in your home–if you have moved, have a new dog, cat, more people, have the litter box in a high traffic area–these are things you need to consider, then put the box somewhere where the kitten feels secure.
Make sure she has her own bed with her blankets, also away from things that scare her and where she feels safe. A cat tree where she can climb up and get off the floor and able to look out windows.

Hope this helps. Cats aren’t grossed out by their pee or poop, but usually it’s instinctual for them to bury it since in the wild their poop would lead predators to them. Sounds like she is having issues with something that is making her feel insecure. Keep us posted!
