    Hello again, everyone

Two of our four kittens are having very unusual bowel movements. Today, my little one Terp, had almost projectile diarrhea. It came out quickly and in little spurts. Then she proceeded to sprint across the house spurting as she went.

I took her to the vet for her distemper shot, brought a sample and had them do a check on her stool. It was similar to what I’ll be posting here and the vet said that there was “nothing abnormal”. I do not trust this vet any more. There’s no way that red diarrhea with specs in it can be normal! They gave me a topical wormer for her to take with, so I gave some to her, and some to our other kitten that was having problems. I bought diatomaceous earth and have been giving them a dose appropriate for their weight for a week now. We went three days with no accidents on the floor, but now Terp’s symptoms are worsening again. I haven’t seen any diarrhea from either of our black kittens. Not once. Just the two grey tabbies.

We’re feeding them Kit and Kaboodle for their dry food, and I give them just a bit of Friskies Pate with their diatomaceous earth. They are all eating and drinking normally, appear hydrated, and are playful. It’s just a few times a day I see accidents on the carpet. For the first time yesterday I saw Terp dry heave once, but nothing before or since. I’ve treated them with the best flea medication possible(from the vet) and put diatomaceous earth on their coats as well. I’m wondering if this is an allergic reaction to the food or if the mixture is making them ill? As soon as humanly possible(probably Saturday morning) I am going to get better food and that’s going to be that. I will powder it with the diatomaceous earth and no more of this swill!

Here are some pictures to give an idea of what is going on.

Any feedback would be so greatly appreciated. I am worried about them.

    Sincerely,

    Whale

*A quick edit about the kittens. It’s primarily, if only my girl Terp that is still appearing ill, though she’s the one that went to the vet. I have worked on a farm and could administer antibiotics if need be. I have sealed syringes available. Is there something I could buy at a farm store to help with this?

I am hesitant to recommend you give her anything else as you seem to know what you are doing. I am concerned about the heavy mucous too, and wonder if they checked for coccidia and giardia in that fecal sample. These are one celled parasites that don’t respond to the usual worm infestation medication.

I also wanted to add, try getting some goat’s milk for them as it contains a lot of good probiotics for their gut. You can get it in the milk section of the grocery or in the baking aisle in cans. The canned is condensed so add water 1 to 1. Also there is powdered. The red specks makes me wonder if it’s the dry food (sometimes they add coloring). They have had a lot of medications including flea meds all at once, so it’s hard to know just what is at the root of the problem. When you are eliminating things, just do one at a time (dry food first) and just feed the wet and see if there is a change. Also, you may want to try another vet….just sayin’. 😉

@kittyzee Thank you!I’ll get goat’s milk today! I switched to a much higher quality food and though my girl, Terp, is still having an accident here and there, her stool looks MUCH better. It is a normal brown color, but still loose and she’s gassy. The other kitten that was having problems seems fine now. I’ll bring her to a new vet tomorrow if she isn’t better by then. She’s eating and drinking well. Just a mushy stool a few times a day. She’s generally very playful. If she keeps hydrating will she be fine?

    HI Aaron,

I’m glad KZ helped you and your kits. You can add pedilyte to their formula instead of water. It’s designed to prevent dehydration and you can get it in the baby food section. Pick up the unflavored one.

Hi Aaron, I think she should be fine. If she should become listless or lethargic, get some honey or karo syrup and rub on her gums and then get goat’s milk or pedialyte into her, then to an ER vet as soon as possible. I hope all it is is a reaction to the food. Have the vet check for those one celled parasites, as they are tricky devils and cause the kind of symptoms that she is having. Keep us posted!
