Hello All. I am planning a trip to Pittsburgh in October with my Mom. If anyone has any hotels that would be good, please let me know. I’m not sure what all there is to do there, but we’d like to be close enough to somewhere central, but not in to congested of an area. Any help would be wonderful. Thank you!

    EAT AT PREMONTE’S!!!!!!

You cannot say you have been to Pittsburgh unless you have done this!

Other than that, all I can say is “I’m jealous.” I’ve never been there, but have always wanted to go.

Thanks, Ginny. What type of cuisine do they have there?

The Doubletree is in Central downtown. There is a subway very close by and very clean I might add. I’ve only been there once my self 2 yrs ago and will be heading back this November.

    Jessica,

I messed up the spelling the first time: it’s called “Primanti Brothers,” it’s a sandwich shop and I don’t think I can do justice to the nirvana found there. I can, however, refer you to the Wikipedia article.

Thank you both. I looked up the DoubleTree on-line and it looks absolutely amazing – for a reasonable price! As for the sandwich, I don’t think I should eat until I go there so that I know I can finish it and afford the weight gain!

Jessica-Your not that far at all from me-Syracuse, NY. As I said the Doubletree was very nice, downtown and the subways are great. We got on subway and overlooked our stop. Well-they could tell we where from out of town and let us ride for free. That in itself on my first night there got my complete respect for the city !!!!!!

Pittsburgh is beautiful. You should try to go to the Strip District. They have the most wonderful produce and places to shop. There also is the Senator John Heinz History Center right below the Strip. I think they are located on Smallman St. Go down Point State Park that is where the Allegheny River and Monengahela form the Ohio River. There also is the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium, they have a wonderful polar bear and sea otter exhibit. There is also the duquesne incline (if you are not afraid of heights) Last but not least is the Gateway Clipper. It is a paddle boat that takes a cruise of the river. It would be very pretty in the fall about the time you will be going. Most of these places are not real expensive and they are really quite nice.

Thank you all! I tried to book at the Doubletree, but they only had smoking rooms left, so they referred me to the Hampton which is close by and is the newest hotel in downtown w/ free parking! It is located in the Strip district, so I’ll be sure to check out the produce and shops. It really sounds like there will be plenty to do & that it will be a fun getaway for us. Thanks again for all of your help!

Hi, Jessica…just happened upon your post because 1. I love cats (have two rescued street cats I named McKinley and Dewey) and 2. I work for the community development group in the Strip District in Pittsburgh (Neighbors in the Strip or NITS for short). You will love the Hampton. It’s right across the street from the Heinz History Center (where the NITS offices are). We have a wonderful map of the shops in the Strip (there’s a whole lot more than just produce!) that I would be happy to send you if you can get your address to me or you can stop in at the History Center and ask for one at the front desk. Also visit our website at http://www.neighborsinthestrip.com. There’s a lot of information there that can help you plan your trip – check the “Strictly Strip Tours, particularly “Secrets of the Strip”. Primanti’s certainly has the sandwich that put Pittsburgh on the map, but there are lots of other great places to eat. The Hampton provides breakfast, but you might try Pamela’s P&G Diner as an alternative (they also do lunch)or DeLucas – both are long-time Pittsburgh favorites for breakfast. For fine dining, try Eleven or Lidia’s (both very close to Hampton). Roland’s Seafood Grille on Penn Avenue is great for lunch – if the weather is good they have a wonderful outdoor balcony where you can watch the action on the street below. The Strip is most lively on Saturday – generally a festival atmosphere with street vendors and lots of people shopping…most of the shops close by 5:00. If you have any questions or if we can be of any help, let me know. Hope you enjoy yourself!

Wow, Cindy! If I eat at all of those places, I won’t do anything else. It’s amazing that you saw my post and are in the heart of it. I would love for you to mail me a map – please send me an e-mail to jstoddard@metlife.com and I will reply with my address. The Strip sounds wonderful and it seems like it is the perfect area to do a lot of different things. I can’t wait to go. Thanks for all of the tips!

    Jessica,

Don’t know if you and your mom would be into visiting a wonderful place called Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens….The conservatory is having a show that was designed strictly for it. Quite a show stopper and worth a visit!

There is also a little boutique hotel, Renaissance The Pittsburgh Hotel. It’s located in downtown and has quite the view of the 3 rivers.

    Don’t miss Primanti Brothers. yummmmy

Pittsburghers are quite friendly and will gladly get you going in the right direction.
