Because cats can empty their stomachs voluntarily, for some people they have a reputation for throwing up a lot. Penny has been demonstrating this talent lately in yakking up hairballs (the hairballs are all that come up, nothing else); I ought to give her some hairball remedy. I will never again, though, consider frequent yakking to be “normal” or “typical” in a cat.
I wonder how common this is among cats? How many cats have this incubating in them? How to find out before it activates and starts destroying blood cells?

Maybe Solange and Pat have gone through this to help the vets learn more… Praying pat gets better very soon and your vets will then know from her the best treatment.. And will test for it first when they see the symptoms again.. Maybe that’s Solange’s legacy her short time with you will help Pat and open the shelter and the vets eyes to this horrible condition….

Because I’m gone from home for so much of the day, I don’t see exactly who is eating what. I’m giving Pat her appetite stimulant along with her antibiotic and its water chaser, but she isn’t as clearly hungry as she was when I gave it to her before. She also slept at the foot of the couch last night. She seemed to feel better when she got home from the vet, but she had just gotten an anti-nausea shot and didn’t start her antibiotic until bedtime. I know that humans sometimes feel ill from taking antibiotics. Myself, I can’t tolerate azithromycin or Augmentin. The first one keeps me in the bathroom constantly, and the second gives me stomach pains that are worse than the discomfort of whatever ailment it was prescribed to treat. Perhaps the doxycycline has taken the edge off Pat’s appetite.
Still, she must be eating something. She’s energetic enough to climb and bounce around the furniture, and the insides of her ears are still white. (If they turn yellowish, that’s bad, because it means liver problems.) She’s not still and limp like poor Solange. If I could have afforded to give The Flagship University of My State US$1000 for a blood transfusion at their vet school, she might have pulled through. We’ll never know, now.

The “what ifs ” take a while to go away Leeny I’ve about 10 “what ifs” when it come to Buttons passing..

But from what I can remember of Solange’s case the vets have a diagnosis very late.. They just weren’t sure what they were dealing with and from what I read transfusions tend to only be successful if the cat is making improvements with the antibiotic treatment .. I don’t think Solange improved enough for a transfusion to be successful…

It sounds very promising that she has a good bit of energy and even though her ears are still on the pale side it’s great they haven’t yellowed since the antibiotics are in her system.. Cats can take up to 3 months to completely regenerate their red blood cells I remember this because Buttons Gums were white for weeks after his attack when he was 8 weeks old….

The insides of Pat’s ears are naturally white, Buttons. It’s part of her coloration, not a symptom of the disease.

Oh ๐Ÿ™‚ though it was indicating the anemia ๐Ÿ™‚ sometimes the nose and ears can appear paler along with the gums ๐Ÿ™‚

Prayers for a good night for her

Buttons, on the day that Solange died, the entire inside of her mouth was white–gums, tongue, and roof.

Pat ate a small bowl of cat treats last night. Nobody seems to be eating much of anything when I’m away. Penny makes the rounds of all the wet food bowls, so I’m going to have to do something about that or she’s going to weigh 20 pounds. I know Pat likes the crunchy stuff better; Kit seems to like both.

Pat got into the dryer this morning as I was taking out my work clothes (not allowed), so she must be feeling better. She did something else that was cute rather than dangerous. After I give her the doxycycline, I have to give her a syringe of water to make sure the pill gets washed out of her esophagus. I keep a cup of water on the table for this purpose, and Pat has started to drink directly from it. This morning the cup needed more water in it, so I filled it from my water bottle, and she purred as I was doing it!

Oh, how cute! Love the water routine. Glad the vet told you to wash down the doxycycline…Lucy took it once and I always wondered if it irritated her throat further (it was already irritated). I gave it to her as she was about to eat her wet food hoping that would wash it down but water is best. As far as Penny goes, I was just remembering this morning how my Emily would do the same thing. And she did gain weight. I just started standing there making sure everyone ate from their bowl…which sometimes meant putting away a bowl the other cats walked away from and offering it again a little later. Now they don’t walk away from their food at all until they are done so “policing” doesn’t take long. And it helped…Emily is back to a normal weight. (It was just a couple of pounds she needed to lose.)

Hope Pat keeps feeling better and better!

The vet called today and told me that Pat’s blood had tested negative for Mycoplasma haemofelis, but that false negatives were not uncommon when testing for that particular bacterium. He told me to finish the antibiotic and to call if Pat vomits any more (she hasn’t thus far).

The only thing I’ve seen her eat is the small bowl of treats I give her in the evening after her pill. She likes those and also likes anything I happen to be eating. I seldom see cats eat the kibble; occasionally I’ll hear some crunching. She must be eating something, though, to be as alert and active as she has been.

The first afghan I ever made when I was learning to crochet is folded at the foot of the sofa. Pat slept on that last night.

Oh Leeny that is amazing news ๐Ÿ™‚ !! That’s made me so happy ! Sounds like she’s getting her appetite back slowly but surely.. Which is probably best if she ate too much at once she might get sick again … A little at a time is best ๐Ÿ™‚
