Several weeks ago she managed to find a broken tabletop artificial Christmas tree. I found out that she had eaten part of it when she started vomiting and I found some of the needles in the yakkage. A trip to the vet stopped the vomiting, but about a week ago I found a hard, dark piece of poop on her favorite resting spot; it had a needle embedded in it. (These needles aren’t sharp or hard; they’re like tiny strips of stiff paper.)

I feed the cats wet food and leave out kibble in case they get hungry between meals. I was getting her to eat by putting treats around the wet food and putting the bowl right beside her. Now that isn’t even working. The vet told me to use beef baby food (the stuff that’s only beef with nothing added) to try to stimulate her appetite. She wasn’t the least bit interested. I’ve mixed treats in with the kibble, and she takes a little of that now and then, but that’s all. If she doesn’t eat this weekend, she has to go back to the vet.

Of course I’m worried that eating the foreign matter has done something to her digestive tract. Looking at her, though, I sometimes think that she’s depressed. She sleeps at my feet now instead of cuddling up next to me. I wish I knew what to do for her.

I’d bring her back before he end of the weekend Leeny and get an xray to rule out any foreign bodies or any slight blockage..

It is good in a way she is still pooping some out but it should have all cleared from her system at this stage..

Sending heaps of healing prayers for her and calming vibes for you Leeny..

    Agree Buttons,
At least you’ll find out what, if anything, you’re dealing with. Plus the sooner you go the faster you’ll get an answer and the less stress you should have.
Blessing that all goes well for you and Pat.

OK; I’ll call in the morning.

I’m scared. I’ve lost too many cats.

I agree with Buttons Leeny. At least if they do the xray and she doesn’t have anything blocking her system, it will give you peace of mind that the pieces of tree aren’t causing the problem. Then, you can go from there. Sending healing vibes to Pat and calming vibes to you Leeny. Please know that we are praying for you Leeny.

The behavior you are seeing as possible depression could be because she doesn’t feel well. I think getting her to the vet is the right thing. Saying a prayer that it will all get worked out at the vet.

It sounds like an x-Ray is logical. Sending tons of good vibes.

SHE HAS THE SAME THING THAT KILLED SOLANGE!

It isn’t as far advanced as it was in Solange, though, so we’ll probably be able to save her. Her kidneys are also starting to decrease in function. The vet is going to give her some fluids (she’s there now), but he didn’t mention anything about her getting fluids at home yet. Both of these conditions produce nausea, vomiting, and anorexia. He’s also going to give her another anti-nausea shot.

When I took her to the vet on Saturday, he drew her blood and gave me an appetite stimulant for her. She started eating enthusiastically Saturday evening; she started vomiting on Sunday evening. I had to leave her at the vet today so he could give her a more in-depth exam.

Oh God Leeny!!!! The chances of this happening are so rare! My praying for her and lighting a candle right now! Thank god you got her in when you did ! She at least has a good chance now especially as they know what they are dealing with!

Were there any other kittens with them when they were in the shelter… ?? You’ll have to ring them to tell them what’s happening..

(((Leeny))) hold tough!!! Were all here for you <3

OMG Leeny, the spate of misfortune that you are going through. Blessings that they are able to treat Pat as hopefully was caught early. Just said a prayer this minute. For you both. When you’ve calmed down you should let shelter know. This is horribly unfair, not only to Pat, but to you, having to go through having a sick kitty yet again. Not to mention the emotional tole this takes out on you. Hope that Kit is doing OK. Honestly shelter should absorb some of the costs of Pat’s care, clearly I have no say, just IMHO. You take care and let us know how things are going. So thankful that you did not wait until mid-week to call vet.

I just read about this in the Merck Veterinary Manual online. It’s caused by a class of bacteria called Hemotropic Mycoplasmas, with the species that affects cats called Mycoplasma haemofelis. Exposed cats can become sick if they are immunocompromised, like cats who are FIV or FeLV positive, or if they are stressed–like being dumped in a shelter after 8 years of living in the same home?

If the blood test for this specific organism comes back positive, the vet said that the pound should be notified.

Buttons, both Pat and Kit were in cages by themselves. The pound, though, was packed with cats and kittens–they were doing everything except hanging cats from the ceiling! That’s how Pat, Kit, and at least three kittens ended up on death row. This particular bacterium should not be communicable through the air, though.

Yes it could well have been stress that set this all off 🙁 thank god you’ve had both of them with you through their worst times.. It’s lousy on you but think of how lucky they will have been to have you in these times..

And it’s so good you didn’t wait for the vet this gives her a very good chance.. I’ve read that it can effect cats anywhere from 6 months to 8 years and normally domestic short haired cats.. Ask your vet about treating her with interferon it seems to be used to help as it boosts immune systems but some vets don’t keep it in stock.. Also I’ve read that some vets remove the spleen to help ! Bit extreme but it’s worth mentioning if it can help..

From what I understand the bacteria make the cats immune system recognize it’s on red blood cells as an infection and start to kill them off.. But when caught early there’s a good prognosis.. Maybe loading Solange is a way made it so you were more alert to pats symptoms and this is what will save her your quick action! Sending heaping loads of prayers for you both!

I found this Leeny and I don’t know if it helps, but it may help explain transmission of this disease:

Fleas and ticks become infected with hemotropic mycoplasmas by feeding on an infected animal. When the
flea or tick then feeds on another animal, the mycoplasmas are transmitted. Because these bacteria are
erythrocyte-associated, they could be spread from an infected animal to a non-infected patient via a blood
transfusion. In the cat, hemotropic mycoplasmas can be transmitted from the queen to her kittens, although
the exact mode of transmission has not been established. There is also clinical evidence supporting
perinatal transmission of hemotropic mycoplasma to puppies, however, this has not been proven.

Transmission from the mother is how the vet thinks Solange got it, Kittyzee.

Oh Leeny, I’m so sorry. No matter how cats get this dreadful disease, it’s devastating to the owners AND the cats. I hope that you found it early enough in Pat that she will live a full, wonderful life with you.

Pat is on doxycycline, 20 mg. two times a day. Last night she slept cuddled between me and the back of the sofa again; lately she had been sleeping at the foot of the sofa. I hope that’s a good sign.
