    Hi everyone!

I’ll launch straight in the the tale (no pun intended) of where we’re at and how that came to be.

We live nextdoor to a lot of strays and a building site directly behind us and now have a some kittens to look after after hearing mewing near our back fence. We kept an eye out for mumma as we were advised to monitor as she might come back for them…. But didn’t.

We’ve been feeding them formula every 3 hours and keeping them warm with hot water bottles, as well as toileting them before and after feelings.

There were initially 4 kittens, 3 boys and one girl (runt) all still with umbilical cords attached. Over the past 24 they’ve been under our care a boy and the girl have passed. A boy passed first, but he looked like he’d had some trauma to his feet. The little girl was making chuffing noises the entire time we had her and while she was (we thought) a fighter to begin with, she faded very quick, infact they both did.

The two boys we have now are seemingly eating enough, but we will bump the time frame from 3 hrs back to 2 as they seem to have lost about 10 grams over the time.

Where we are now is worried, and fretting because they haven’t pooped yet and of course, cause they’ve lost weight.

Any ideas on when the first poop will happen? Also should the increase in feeds mean they’ll get their weight back?

Thanks everyone in advance for any insight you might be able to give 2 new kitty parents

Nikki, bless you for taking on the kittens and sorry that two of them have passed on to The Meadow. At least their few short days were warm and they were loved.
Now, hand rearing kittens – all you need to know.

Links for kitten-raising sites, eg Messybeast

I hope that those links give you all you need to know.
Do let us know how the kittens are going, what you are feeding them on etc. Make sure they are fed with their tummies facing the ground, the chances of milk being inhaled is much less this way.
It has been a long time since I have had to feed a kitten so hopefully others will be able to add their experiences and helpful information.

Thank you Moonshadow! I’ve had cats my whole life but never this young so this is a little exciting, though also very daunting so I appreciate the help.

I’ve had a quick read of the poop post, and will be upping the water to start with. We’re fairly certain mumma left soon after having them as the first time we fed them they ate a lot! We’re currently feeding with Di-Vetelact, 30ml per session with syringes (sometimes a little more or less). I know how important to get fluids in and hopefully that will right the poop (or lack of) situation.

They’re definitely fed on their tummies as they’re too wriggly to feed any other way!

I’ll get to reading the how to’s right now. And getting plenty of updates!

First feed w/ 1:4 water mix (no oil yet) went really well, in fact smoothest feed we’ve had! Both boys vocal as always. On e set of opening eyes too!!

Probably won’t update feeds over night but will start again in the morning. Will try first poop-centric elimination tomorrow to see what we get. Thank you again!

Hi Nikki, welcome to TDK! MS gave you very good advice and two of the best links possible for successful kitten raising. On advice I found on here, I raised my last kitten on goat’s milk almost entirely until he was weaned. You can find canned in the baking section of most groceries (mixed 1 to 1 with water as it’s condensed) or in the cold milk section. It helps to prevent the diarrhea or constipation caused by powdered/liquid kitten replacement milk. Anyway, the best thing is hydration and warmth for your kittens, which you are already doing. Good luck being new parents, and keep us posted please!

Hi kittyzee! Thanks for the welcome and advice though for the time being we’re just going to up the fluid in the Di-vetelact and see how that fares over the next day. Already their skins flicks back a lot quicker.
The feeds overnight have all gone well, & I think I might have jumped the gun on the eyes opening. Though their ears have opened! The boys are good though take a little rousing to feed on every second hour and one is a little more lethargic than the other but still feeding well and they’re both plenty warm.
Will continue to update as we go 🙂

    Hi again!
Well we have some good news and some not so good news.

The good is one of the boys has pooped twice (yay!) however his brother has not.

He is otherwise feeding ok and doesn’t seem terribly uncomfortable, though we’ve had them in our care for 4 days now so I’m a little worried that something more troubling is happening. We upped the water in the formula but dropped it back, and have given oil the past couple feeds but nothing yet.

There’s a feed in 10 minutes so I’m going to try out the triangle method to see if that produces a movement, but I’m worried with what might happen next if he doesn’t.

    Any ideas?

Also urine is light yellow/clear so don’t think dehydration has anything to do with it?

Hi Nikki! Congratulations on the poop! We do get excited about poop here! With some kittens, it’s hard to get them to go. I would say just keep doing what you are doing. A warm washcloth, gently rubbed on the area about 20 minutes or so after they have eaten, eventually he will go. The first poop might be a little hard, but with the oil softening it, it should soften up to about the consistency of toothpaste and be much easier for him. And it doesn’t sound like he is dehydrated.

Hi kittyzee, I did see that everyone gets excited and I got excited too! Haha

I just finished the feeding -it’s hard to get the down after sometimes! But I’ll give a rub in 20 and see how we go.

Ok so now one has diarrhoea… Have watered food mixture way down and got as many fluids in as possible for both. It was only a little bit (think size of a small coin, 10c piece or a quarter, yellow) so we’re just going to monitor but he was very lethargic, though he suckled (very lazily) and purred.

We’re thinking perhaps we oversee slightly as there are so many differing pieces if advice on how much to feed.

I saw there are electrolyte solutions we can make at home but have no bicarbonate soda. Can we use just sugar and salt?

Where do we go from here??

Doing the happy dance for the poop but tinged with sadness for the diarrhoea. We have pages on that topic too.

Hi again! More updates and more questions.

The pooping and diahrea seems to have sorted itself out. They’re getting furrier and more mobile and are becoming rather good at climbing.

The thing that is worrying us now is that though they are feeding regularly and between 4-7.5mls at a time every 3 hours, they don’t seem to be putting on weight. They don’t cry for food and infact we have to wake them up to gets them to feed them. They are fine once they actually do wake up and they feed fine. They’re just not gaining.

What do we do? I’ve had a but if a hunt around for previous topics but nothing seems similiar.

    Thanks again in advance.

I don’t worry too much about the gaining weight part. I always fed my kittens as much as they wanted and when they had enough they’d stop. A good rule of thumb though is to get them vet checked because they will need meds for parasites as all kittens have them. They get them from their moms and could be worms or the one celled parasites that could be causing the diarrhea. The diarrhea itself is not a big deal, unless it continues and they become ill from it, and become dehydrated. Keep us posted!

This might sound awful, but I honestly cannot afford to get them get checked. We didn’t plan on hand rearing but the place we took them to to rear thought they were older and could not accommodate such little beings.

They’ve provided us with the milk replacement and droppers, basically everything we need to feed them for the next couple weeks til they’re old enough to go to this place (the take kittens 2 weeks and old, will do all appropriate vet things, microchipping, shots, etc) and adopts them out.

That being said, one of them passed a small amount of blood AFTER his poop after the feeding just now.he seems content enough, not in pain etc, but from the copious amounts of googling it sounds like it could be worms or something like that. Has anyone had experience with similar? Can we just monitor? I could take them to a vet but without being able to pay I’m worried we’d be refused treatment.

Also, they’re movements aren’t solid, but aren’t super runny but are maybe a step before diahrea consistency.

    Update:

2 feeds since the blood incident, and no further bleeding. Taking this as a good sign and continuing the monitor.
Again, they’ve been feeding fine & full of beans. Today marks a weeks since we’ve had them in our care and were waiting for some major developments to see how we’re faring.

They’re not fading, which is good, but they seem to been at the same stage developmentally as they were 5 days ago. Maybe I’m being impatient but I’m getting nervous again.
