I bought my lawnmower at a yard sale and have no idea about the oil.

I don;t know how I’ve even made it at all in the 3 years I’ve been on my own. My ex mentioned last spring about the necessity of changing the filter on the furnace. Then he saw my confused look and said, surely you have changed the filters!!! I said, where is the furnace?

Oh, Catwoman, you are too cute!:)

My push mower has a little black cap right on the top of the mower motor that says OIL on it. This I at least know… LOL When I checked it, it is almost empty. It was smoking the last time I used it, but I didn’t want to stop as I only had a small piece of grass left to cut. It just stopped in action…. I am afraid I may have ruind a brand new mower, only used it a few times. I will call Sears in the morning and ask what type of oil it uses for sure.

    Catwoman,

I have at least changed the filter on our furnace so it works more efficiently. I used to do all my own stuff years ago. Changed the oil in my van, and all that. Even did my own brakes once. Then I got involved with a guy and he kinda took over. Sometimes guys are not too smart, and I don’t always trust their judgement as I am a perfectionist mostly and am terribly picky about everything. I would rather just do it myself so I can sleep at night. Everytime I get my car fixed, I worry that they forgot a bolt, or the tire is loose, etc. etc… It kills me NOT to worry about these things.

I hope your motor didn’t seize up, Bumblebee, or you have ruined your mower.

Years ago, my sister worked for me in my furniture store and was going to make a delivery in our old truck. She was headed out on the X-way and the thing started “smoking”. She pulled over and flagged down some help. (This was before cell phones.) She thought it was the radiator and that it needed water, but the engine had blown because it had no oil. It was an older Ford truck, and it guzzled oil, but evidently, we hadn’t been watching close enough and bingo-no more truck.

I just went out to the garage to check my own lawnmower. There is a cap on the other side from the gas cap, I guess so you don’t mix them up, with a drawing of an oil can on it. When I opened the cap there was a dipstick attached, just like in the car. Mine seems to have oil, not sure if it is low since I don’t know where it is supposed to be, but I look foraward to saying to ex-husband tomorrow, “Hey, I was checking the oil in my lawnmower, and was wondering how much oil it needs?” He will be shocked and impressed!

He’ll like the fact that you asked! Men are like that.

Bumblebee, upon realizing that I knew nothing about filters my ex brought me to Home Depot and showed me the ones I needed. I have two furnaces, one in the basement and one in the attic, and two intake places that needed filters. I proudly paid extra and got the ones that trap cat dander. When ex came over to show me how to change them, the old ones were so clogged with dust, dirt and cat hair that he was shocked that my furnace worked at all! But now I know and check the filters regularly.

Ok, ladies, lawnmowers have a gas dipstick. It say gas on the top of the cap, same with the oil. Most lawnmowers that I have had they are right next to each other. You pull the stick out, wipe it off, put the stick back down pull it out and read where the level is on the stick. Seems like most of you are out of oil, so you need to refill. Yes, I forgot who said it 30/30 is fine for lawnmowers. What am I gonna do with you girls! And yes, you need to change the filters on the furnace at least once a year, two or 3 times as needed. The furnace is the thing that makes noise when you walk past it in your house! The filter is inside of the monster, once you find it! May be on the door, or on the side. You guys are too funny! Lynn

Hi, Catwoman, Max and Molly’s Mom, bumblebee and Lynn! I didn’t get a chance to post yesterday although I did look for the night shift last night–no one online. My husband and I host a BBQ for law students of color and attorneys each year. This was the weekend for the BBQ so yesterday we spent cleaning up and shopping for food. Today we continued to get ready. In years past we’ve had as many as 40 or 50 people. This year we had about 8 students and one lawyer. *sigh* It was still fun.

    Catwoman,

Good for you about knowing how to change all those filters, and for going out to look at your lawn mower. I DO check my oil, trans fluid, and water in my car at least once a week though. That is good that your Ex took you and showed you. My Ex never even talked to me after he left.

    GOOD for you girl!!! 🙂

You know, it’s sad, Lynn, that when households break up and one or the other spouse doesn’t know how to do things, or fix things, or even reconcile a checkbook. I guess the best thing to do is ask someone for help, that is, if you know what you need help with!!

Lynn, LOL!!! The furnace is in the corner of the basement, behind the water heater! See, I figured it out. There is another one up in the attic. I never go up there, the pull-down stairs are hard to get down and it is hot up there…so I forgot there was a big monster machine up there. Then there were two places that look like ceiling vents, which I now know do not give air but pull it in toward the furnace…I check those often now since they looked like squirrel beds after 2+ years of neglect. My ex said I could have had a fire in the furnace from all of the dust trapped in there. Now I am furnace vigilant.

Hey, KW, sorry the BBq didn’t end up as you would have liked, but anyone you could help, it was a good thing. Don’t despair. It was good. Hugs and purrs, Lynn

Hi KW, how’s it going? Did you have food for 50 people and only get 9?

What are you going to do with it all? Hope it wasn’t all cooked so you can freeze it and have it for another time!!

Time for truth. How many of us change the oil in our cars regularly? I’m supposed to do it every 3,000 miles but don’t usually meet that goal.

I have not balanced my checkbook in 3 years. As a right-brained creative person, I eschew such habits. Instead, I check my account online to see what the bank says I have, and consider that they are nice people who are better than me at math and thier number is probably correct. 😉

Lynn, my oil has a dipstick, not the gas on my mower.

I am eating Maypo and toast by the way….

We had an idea of the low numbers this year. We did have food left over and sent off plates of it with the students who came. You can never give enough food to a starving student. 🙂
