My newborn kitten, neary 2 weeks old has just opened her eyes. But one eye is closed and there seems to be something dried sticking her upper and lower eyelid together. I’ve tried removing it with dampened cloth, but she keeps moving her head. How can I remove this safely?

Often one eye opens a day or half day before the other one so I wouldn’t try to force it. Make sure the general light level is low as when kittens’ eyes first open, too bright a light can hurt their eyes.

Or do you mean that the closed eye WAS open before but has now closed again and is stuck with a sticky eye goop? If there is not much goop, you can try bathing it gently with cold tea and cotton wool, this is soothing and antiseptic, but do not try to force the eye open.

However if there is a lot of goop and it is green or yellow coloured and looks like pus, this could mean an infection and you need to take kitten to the vet. If in any doubt, the vet is always best.

I think it might be discharge, because I saw it on one eye before she even had them open. Should I try to remove the dried dicharge?

Does she have a mother cat with her or not? If there is a mama cat, I would leave it to the mama cat.

She has a mamma cat, but the mamma cat hasn’t done anything, and I think it has been a week since I noticed the eye
