Seeing as how I’ll be a new kitty owner in less than a week (YAY!), I have a few questions.

How much do you feed a young, growing kitten?

What do I do if he meows a lot when I leave him by himself?

The foster woman said that he meows a LOT now when he’s left alone, because his bros and sisters have been adopted out. Unfortunately I can not get another kitten right now- I’ll be living in elderly/disabled housing and the landlord only allows one per household.

    Thanks…

Jen, congrats on the upcoming partnership with the new kitty 🙂 I put up a pink tag in the right hand corner of the page, there are many threads that will show up with advice or questions/answers given before. How old is your new kitten? The foster woman should be able to help with the food(s) given to the little one, if feeding store bought foods it should be be kitten food for at least the first year. Check to see what type of litter she uses also, their little feet are just as tender as ours are when it comes to what they are walking on. As for the meowing, of course he is lonely he has had his littermates up to now. There are things you can do like use a hot water bottle or one of the soy/wheat filled socks warmed up and having a towel wrapped around it to comfort the baby. Others know much more than I about raising kittens, I normally have adopted adult or elderly cats and it has been years (12 yrs) since I had babies of 4 weeks old. BTW welcome to TDK 🙂

Awesome thanks! I want him to be nice and comfy and cozy when he moves in! Great idea, I’d not used the tag thing before.

I know cats meow, and that’s not a problem, but I’ll read up on behavior because I don’t want him to have any problems with separation anxiety or anything…

    Jen,

Will you be leaving the little one alone because you have a regular job? Or will it just be a few hours while you run errands, shop, etc.?

If you won’t be gone on a regular basis, you will probably be able to keep the little one happy by leaving the TV on. Lots of animals like the Animal Planet station.

If you are going to be gone for hours each day, here are a couple of suggestions:

    1. Make friends with a neighbor as soon as you can and take the kitty to her apartment while you are gone. It would be good for both of them. OR (better still)

    2. Talk one of your new neighbors into getting a cat. If the new kitty spends most of the time in your apartment, but belongs to another tenant the landlord can’t make too much of a fuss.

The last way to work with the Only One Pet rule is if your kitten is a Companion Animal. I don’t know what qualifies you to move to the new housing but if it’s a disability that justifies having a Companion Animal your doctor can help you with the paperwork. A Companion Animal doesn’t usually count as a pet so you could get the cat and yourself another pet.

You may discover, if you are home most of the time, that kitty is perfectly happy with just you as his family. He’ll need someone to talk to and to talk to him, someone to play with him when he’s feeling frisky and to cuddle with when he’s feeling lovey. If he’s alone a couple hours at a time, he’ll just sleep and wait for you.

I’m home most of the time as it is, yes. Thanks for the advice. I do volunteer right now but only from around 12-3 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. The TV being on is a good idea, thanks! Plus I usually only run errands and go out on my days off, so he should probably be okay.

I can’t wait to bring the little guy home!

oh, good luck Jen. You are thinking so well about this and should have a wonderful relationship with your new baby. Am typing this one-handed because my baby boy — going on 7 years — is curled up sleeping around my left hand. I call this “the fur glove”

Just a thought, I was wondering the best way to keep your kitten(s) off unwanted/unsafe areas… water bottle, double stick tape, or a can of coins? Any other suggestions or advice?

    Thanks!

It will be interesting to see what people reply to your question about keeping them off places 🙂

My cat has run of the house, I don’t try to keep her off of counters, because she is not a dog. She does not respond to commands and she will only learn not to do certain things if your around. Our cat knows how we are walking if we are going to shoo her off somewhere, so before we even get close to her she will jump down, but she wont move if we don’t…she is too smart for that 🙂

My mother hates animals, so before she comes we clean off our rocker and the put down some plastic matting that we bought by the foot from somewhere, it has pointy plastic on the bottom to grab the carpet, so we lay it with that facing up, and Kiko doesn’t like the feeling so she wont go on that furniture while its there.

As far as the stove top and other unsafe areas (i can only think of the stove in my house), I don’t leave my cooking unattended. And I have never seen her on the stove anyway. She does get on the counters, but we have medium/large dogs that could have access to our counter tops anyway, so we never leave any kind of food on the counters anyway. She mostly goes on the counters to watch us play cards at the table, or to drink out of the sink 🙂

Oh okay. I figure I could always leave him in the other room while I cook for a bit (I’m not much of a chef anyway so if I cook anything over 5-10 minutes I’d be amazed). I guess I’m just a nervous-Nellie!

    Thanks for your input!

Just put your kitten in a room with some toys and he should be fine for 3 hours. They sleep a lot anyway. But then again, my kitten has an older sibling to annoy.

Anyone have advice on how to switch a kitten over to another food? Should I change both wet and dry at the same time, or do one first? I was told to add 25% new canned food for a few days at a time until it evens out to 100% of the new stuff… does that apply to dry food as well?

    Thanks!
