    Hello friends,

I have no vet, pet store or shelter around(you know that already). So please help asap.

I have rescued three new kittens yesterday- they are about 4 months old. But they seemed very weak and distressed from the start. After having a meal they all vomited. Later I found them having loose motion. I currently am giving them a 12-24 hours break. They are weaker than my other kittens(you know Candy, Cleo and cloud). They are still alert with pink noses and gums. The vomit is clear and not smelly. They responds too. But they are throwing up anything they eat. They must have eaten garbage while they were left in the trash.

What should I give them after this 12 hours? pedialyte? Will Flagyl(metronidazole) help? I found on the net that 50/50 mixture of chicken and rice will do after this period. I have checked other posts though. Still it would be really helpful if you give some suggestions for these kittens. Thanks.

Thanks JEANKIT. But the kittens are 4/5 months old. And they have no appetite at all. They look hungry, but can’t eat or drink anything. But they themselves are having little pedialyte and not vomiting. That should be a good sign, right?

12 hours is a very long time for them to be without food, especially if they were starving when you found them. You need to start them off with small amounts of food, at regular intervals of 2-3 hours, so that their bodies have time to adjust and their digestive systems can start back up again. By small amounts I literally mean no more than a tablespoon of food.

The pedialyte is a good idea – it will help them get their hydration & electrolyte levels back up. If the vomitting continues, and they still have no appetite, they probably have coccidia, which needs medication. I’m not sure how/if you can get it – over here in SA the vets give metrinadozole (also known as Flagyl) for coccidia.

I rejected 12 hours idea as they are quite weak. Flagyl is really bitter and they hate it as I powdered half a capsule and mixed with water. I can force feed a few drops though, but they seem to throw up fast. But now they are having a lot of pedialyte- and I mean really LOT. Still throwing up after an hour or two though but having the liquid again. I offered bone and skinless chicken breast(only boiled) but they hate it.

I am a vet tech and it sounds like they may have may have eaten something they shouldnt have if you say they got into the garbage. They may even have a toxicity from something or it could be a simple has having intestinal parasites. Where do you live? THey should really see a vet as they way they are acting sounds like their lives are on the line. Your should also check under the toung for a string, if there is one, LEAVE IT ALONE AND GO TO A VET ASAP.

Normally, I wouldn’t suggest this, but you can try a little tiny bit of KMR or half and half to soothe their tummies. See if they can hold that down. I found a starved little kitten and even though he was itching to eat, I introduced him slowly to liquids that are tasty and little bits of pate so he wouldn’t throw up from overeating. Milk is bad for cats so this isn’t a longterm thing, but it can help to see if they can keep down food. You might want to try to get some A/D from a vet as well, as it is easy to digest and high in calories. I don’t know about medications, but if they continue throwing up they really need a vet :
