Hello, I am new to the forum and I have a question (and I apologize for the length of it lol). I adopted a new kitten yesterday and when we brought him home he was great. Very playful, eating well and very energetic and I didn’t notice any bathroom issues. This morning my kids came to me and told me he had pooped on the bed. It was diarrhea with bright red blood in it. He is still acting normal (playful, energetic, eating well). I’m wondering what could be the cause of this? New environment, change in food, stress of a new place? I have a 1 year old cat too, but have never dealt with this before. I’m keeping them apart right now just in case my older cat can get sick. Any ideas why could be happening? Thanks so much!

Your kitten may have parasites, the single cell type called coccidia. The symptoms of this is diarrhea tinged with blood. A vet visit is necessary to determine what is going on and they will probably take a stool sample. The best thing you can do now is to keep him from getting dehydrated. You haven’t said how old your kitten is but pedialyte fed by syringe if needed or goat’s milk would be good to keep his tummy from being upset and give good gut flora. He will probably have to have some type of medication to kill these parasites and goat’s milk would be great since most cats are lactose intolerant and shouldn’t drink cow’s milk. Depending on what is going on with your kitten, your older cat may need treated too. Keep us posted.

Thanks for your response. He is about 12 weeks old. He only had 2 poops that were like this and has been OK ever since. I called my vet and they are seeing him tomorrow, but they said since it was only a couple of times he is probably fine. Thanks again.
