Hello all! I just got a new kitten yesterday and he has not been litter box trained. He is about three months old. How do I get him to use the box instead of the floor? Does he need a separate box from my other cat?

You hit he nail on the head… Cats general debt like sharing trays. Is your other cat neutered ? Cats that aren’t neutered/spayed have very strong smelling urine because oh hormones and if this is the case your kitten won’t like the smell. If your other cat is neutered its just a case of a finiky kitten… I would get a separate tray and make sure to clean it regularly because cats don’t like using a tray that’s dirt even if its their own dirt..

I know my Buttons is OCD with his litter tray and will ONLY use it immediately after he sees me clean it for him so i have to clean his tray at least 3 times a day and i completely clear out the cat litter every second day.

Just make sure to get a tray big enough (he won’t use it if its too small) and invent in a good quality litter

No my other one is not spayed yet, but I did go get another litter box for my new baby. He has been hiding pretty much all day so I haven’t been able to show him the new litter box. Hopefully it will work for him 🙂

Great he’ll probably be happy with his own tray but one extremely important thing is to neutered your kitties … Females can go into heat as early as 4 months old and males can be aggressive to young cats if left un-neutered.. Its so important to spay and neuter i hope you’ll check with your vet about neutering . Your cats will adjust a lot better when both are neutered your

Going outside the box definitely means they don’t like what’s in there (unless there is a urinary infection, in which case all bets are off). Even the little 2 month old feral I just caught used the box with zero intervention from me.

There are some really fussy cats in this world. 🙂 One of mine was making me crazy, and omg I hated her for that. I soon realized she flat out did not like being in a litter pan, even a clean one! She used it more like a toilet, standing outside the box with her front paws. Until we got a short box, positioned just right, where she could do that, she was going all over the house. She completely hated clumping litter…you could experiment with the type of litter you’re using. Once we got it right, we had zero potty issues.

🙂 Definitely spay/neuter. Life is so much happier that way…a lot of humane societies will have a spay/neuter clinic every few months, and it’s a lot cheaper, if money is an issue. There is also a national group that can provide help finding reduced rates at local vets…you call them up and they will tell you who in you area is participating. You can do a search for “voucher spay neuter” + your town/region/state name if this link doesn’t help…

Usually you just have to plop a cat in a litter box once or twice and they will instinctually always go to it. If not, make sure that it is clean. If they don’t wanna share get another box. And then if there is still an issue you might look into taking kitty to the vet to see if it has a UTI.

If the kitten is hiding make sure you put the litter box near him or her, and make sure the other cat is not bullying the new kitten.

    Spay and neuter as well.

My kitty would go on newspapers and my bed until I introduced the litter box to him in his 2nd month. I tore up strips of his pee stained papers and mixed it with the litter and he got on board almost immediately. Although once in a blue moon when I change his litter completely, he prefers going on my bed/ quilt! He just likes it soft 😀
