Thank God that you did take him to the vet…you are a very good Mama. Giving him the food that he was used to is also a good idea. A lot of kitties have issues with food changes and often it has to be done gradually, as in mixing old and new food together. Either way, is this food the wet or dry kind. If its wet could you jut put the medication in a very small amount of wet food and have him eat that. If what you have is dry food. possibly make a soupy mix with water (especially as he loves water – by the way, 3 of my 7 love water also) and the medication. If not, see if that same brand and flavor dry food comes in the wet variety.

Great job getting Salem checked out early.

Keep us posted. Hope that he responds to the meds quickly.

Krystal your kitty sounds like it might have been weaned too early from it’s mother for it to be so clingy. I think another kitten might be better than the older cats as your kitten would probably be happy with someone closer to it’s age. I am glad you took him to the vet so quickly. It says you really care about this little furry buddy. It is wonderful that you have bonded so well with your kitten. You have received lots of good advice here. Keep us posted on how Salem does. Hugs and purrs and welcome to TDK.

A small bit of advice. If you decide to get Salem a little pal,be sure that the coccidia is cleared up first. It is very contagious & can spread quickly to any other cats he is exposed to. Trust me,as loving as he sounds toward you,any anger he might be feeling now will dissipate soon after. He sounds so cute.

Well, he threw up the medicine last night. I called the vet to ask what to do and they said their main concern if we was still vomiting is dehydration. There are two ways to try to hydrate him the vet suggests. One is some fluid I can take home to give him. But if he can’t hold down food or medicine, that probably won’t do us any good. The other is an injection that the vet would give him. So we have an appointment for tomorrow morning. I’m going to try to give him his medicine tonight anyways. If he holds it down, I’m probably going to cancel the appointment until there is another problem. This is getting EXPENSIVE! I’ve fallen completely in love with Salem, so there is NO way I could ever return him. But Ive had him less than a week and this will be our third vet visit. The store only covers medicine if the animal needs it (and it’s determined to be a pre-existing problem), but the exams yesterday cost me $60, and tomorrow’s fee starts out at $38, before the liquids and everything. i expected to have to start putting away money in case of an emergency with my kitten, but didn’t think he would need it within the first week! I;m a college student who started my own business (fire dancing instruction/performance). When I work a lot the money is good, but its slow right now because I have finals this week so I put everything down. I really hope he feels better by tonight and is able to keep his medicine down, I’ll always take him to the vet if he needs it, but i really would rather not pay that again.

On the brighter side, he is at least still trying to eat, and he’s kept a little bit of food down. And although he slept in again until 11 with me, when I decided to get up he perked right up and is acting as though he feels great today. Much improvement from yesterday 🙂

Does anyone know if it makes a difference if I give him his medication in the morning or at night? I figured a consistent time would be best, but didn’t know if it made any difference when that time is.

Does Salem eat any type of wet food? Great Dane had some success in adding water to the wet food for her kitten Milo. (You should check out her Catster page sometime. She has lots of great videos of her Bob and Milo.) Offering it to him on your fingertips might help so all he has to do is lick it off. I wonder if the vet would approve of dividing the dose of the medication and giving the smaller amounts more frequently. He might be able to keep most of the small doses down if he got the meds that way.

I’m glad he let you sleep in and seems to feel well. 🙂

    Hello Krystal,

I just started reading the thread and I think Salem is really a sweetheart. Sorry to hear about what Salem is going through at the moment. I applaud you for being such a good fur mommy and taking good care of him. However, I do have a question for you.

Before you purchase him from the store, did you have a thorough physical examination done? Did he get all the shots before you get him home? I know that if a kitten is adopted out of a shelter, they will make sure that they are in tip top condition before releasing them to a good home. I have no idea how the store conduct business but it would be vital to contact the store and to get a family history first. Is he a purebred kitty? I am not trying to scare you but he could have inherited some genetic disease which was not disclose to you. Is he neutered btw?

Poor baby–hope he gets better soon. Since this is all because of an ailment he had from the store, I would take the store to small claims court to get my money back.

OK, so 3 vet visits, 2 medications, and 1 week later, Salem is doing MUCH better. He isn’t throwing up anymore, is back to a normal energy level (and back to waking me up bright and early to play every morning), is eating and drinking enough again… He seems to be all better. And I’ve gotten much better at giving him that liquid medicine hehe. Our only issue now is his constant need for my presence (if your biggest problem is that your kitten wants to be with you too much, your doing pretty alright lol). It really wouldn’t be a problem at all, except that I have to go visit my mom next week for several days. I can take him with me, but he’s going to have to stay locked in a room because my mom has a dog and a cat that do not accept other animals. I’m going to have to leave the house sometimes, and am worried about him. He’ll be safe and all, I’m not worried about his health, but he still screams and cries every time I leave the room just long enough to use the bathroom or take a shower. Even with my roommates here, and 3 other cats (2 of which have finally accepted him, and now they play a lot), he still gets very whiny if I’m not there. If I’m at my computer, he’s sitting on my desk. If I’m making food, he’s on the kitchen counter. If I lay down in bed, he jumps right in next to me. It’s great that he wants my attention so much, and I love giving it to him. But I have to be able to leave him at home and know he’s OK when I’m doing other things. He has other people, other cats, TONS of toys… What else can I do to help him stay calm when I’m not around? And any tips on what to do with him at my mom’s house?

    Thanks guys <3

What great news about Salem!! Glad he is feeling better. I don’t have any experience with a kitten as young as Salem, but I’m sure others will have some ideas for you. So many people here wish their kit would be more affectionate. Sounds like you have all the affection from Salem you may ever need or want! He sounds like a sweetheart. 😀

I’m soooooo glad to hear that Salem is doing better. It is really a good thing that what we are talking about now is “too much loving”, this is a wonderful fluffy thing to be discussing. I’m sure you’ll get some good ideas from others, but at the least I would say to take hiim on the trip with you, mostly because he is so close to his recovery…you would want to keep a closer eye on him . Bring as many familiar things with you as you can, toys, etc. Enjoy your sweet baby!

Salem is still just a baby and he views you as his mommy. He’s been through a lot in his short life and you are the one who is giving him all his care. Of course he wants you to be there 24/7.

He will probably always be a really loving cat, but he’ll probably get less clingy when he gets older. Just like real kids, enjoy his babyhood while you can. It won’t be too long before you call him and his response is “I’m doing something right now – I’ll get back to you.”

Take baby Salem with you and don’t be concerned that he will have to stay in a shut room. He will be quite happy sharing your room with his own litter and feeding stations. (you can use a disposable litter pan during the visit). Just take his essentials (meds, toys, favorite blankie) If you are driving, food and dishes. Regardless of transportation, cat carrier, harness and leash for his protection.

This may sound like the ultimate crazy cat lady thing to do, but could you get one of those baby slings and stick him in it and carry him around with you at your moms house. If he is bundled up next to you he may not cry and the other pets may not notice that he is there.

I second that KYKAT 12 23! That’s how I use to carry my girl around when I bring her to my office. She’s safe and she’s all snuggled up on my chest, keeping her warm and my heartbeat reminds her of mommy. It’s a wonderful idea.

I use a large piece of sarong for that purpose. Any large cloth will do but make sure it is secured. Oh, how I wish I could still do that! I felt my maternal instinct kicking into full drive, although I was just being a mommy to a little furball at that time.

Hope I don’t get “banned for Spam” for this post! Here’s a link to a “baby sling” that is made specifically for kitties. You can even get it monogrammed 😉

    http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=3261+16901+3377&pcatid=3377

If the link doesn’t work, google Drs Foster and Smith, go to the web site and search “cats – carriers and crates” It is called a “Pet Pouch Carrier”.
