Hello, I just got a new kitten under unfortunate surcumstances, my girlfriend drives truck, and on her route she seen a kitten in the ditch. She stoped and retrieved him, and he was a little banged up, after bringing to the vet they suspected she had been thrown from a car on the highway, the kitten has broken teeth, road rash on its paws, face and head, and a bad eye infection. After the visit with the vet we got the cat all her shots, and some eye drops from the infection. It has been a day now and the cat has not pooped yet, she has peed but no bowl movements as of yet. We assume she was out there for at least a day or two since her wounds have started healing already. Also assumed she did not eat for a few days, since when we brought her home she couldn’t stop eating and drinking. When should I be concerned about the non bowl movements? Is it the litter i am using? She has no problem peeing in the box, and for some reason loves to roll around in the litter. Also cause of the road rash on her paws everytime she goes in litter box, litter gets stuck in her wounds, but I’ve been cleaning it out with a q-tip. She also wonders around the room meowing lots at times. Should I bring he back to vet or give her another day to try to have a bowl movement, as I think in humans it takes a day or two for food to go thorough our system, and maybe since she didn’t eat for few days it will take a little long to pass through. Any other tips on how I should care for her will help to. I currently have two cats and have kept new kitten in my bedroom closed off so they can get use to each other’s smells through the door. She is pretty small probably only a month or two old, dosent really know how to play yet or just dosent want to, just eats n sleeps or wonders meowing. Thanks for any help.

Hi Brant. Let her cry. That’ll help and hold her a lot. I don’t know what type of litter you’re using but if you have a Dollar General? Get the Ever Pet. It’s best and softer on lease, so to speak. Since you’re lucky enough to have a vet? I’d ask. I don’t know if going without at that age is good. Baby will have trauma you need to cure now. Letting her cry and constant holding are part of kitten trauma healing but try not to go near where she was picked up. You may not be able to which would be a good thing. Get lavender scent (candles, air freshener, oil) that’s good for healing. If you have the money there’s something called Feliway. It ain’t cheap but it mimics mothers scent. I wish you luck with your new child. Keep us posted.

Hi Brant, it’s so good of you and your girlfriend for saving this little kitten. Did they vet have any idea how old this kitten is? She must be eating solid food at this point so she is probably at least 5 weeks old or older. Feed her wet food, it will process easier and go to the store and get some goat’s milk. You can find it in the refrigerated milk section, or also in the baking aisle in cans. The canned is condensed, so add water 1 to 1. It’s great because it contains low levels of lactose (unlike cow’s milk) and has probiotics for their digestive systems. This along with the wet food, (you could add a few drops of olive oil to the wet food to help with her constipation) should help her to go. She may just be malnourished enough that her body is using all the food and she won’t have much poop for a few days. Make sure the litter you are using is just the plain old clay, nonclumping, unscented litter for now. Kittens tend to eat litter and the clumping kind can cause an obstruction–which you do not want.
I’m going to post some links for you on hand rearing kittens, also on introducing your cat to the rest of the household when it’s time. Let us know how she is doing and good luck!!

Oh, I forgot to add also, that she is crying probably because she is lonely (she may have had littermates and a mother that she is missing). Holding her, petting her, talking softly to her should help her with her lonliness, and teach her warmth, love and kindness.

Maybe not for now Brant but? I’ve been having success with Yuri using plain yogurt I put in a dropper and run under hot water til it’s warm. No gas! Same for milk. I got 2%. He’s having some issues and at 6 months I don’t want him losing fat nor taurine. He doesn’t eat a lot of dry. Goats milk makes his ears beet red. If you have sensitivities to yeast….so if so try warming the milk. I bought no fat yogurt which might not have been a good idea but? The 4% one has 2% vitamin A per 7oz and I’m really not sure about it. Probiotics and all. Just sharing.

Get her a soft, snuggly stuffed toy. If she doesn’t go to immediately, talk softly to her as you guide her to her new BFF.
