I am a grandmother who has 14 cats (6 indoor, 8 outdoor former ferals that live in the barn), 2 dogs, 3 mules and 3 horses. I am involved with the WarmFuzzys organization that works with the TNR of feral cats. I am currently working on building a raccoon-proof feeding station for my outdoor kitties. If it works the way I hope, I will be making more for 5 semi-feral ones that I am feeding for a lady who’s health has prevented her from taking care of. I have always loved and had cats (my indoor ones are 19 and 20 years old) and I just got started with the ferals in the past 3 or 4 years. My husband isn’t really happy about being married to the “crazy old cat lady”!

    Welcome, Murlynne!!

My boyfriend is already asking me if I’ll be one of those cat ladies myself, lol. I love cats and want more than just our one when we get a house of our own hehe.

Thanks to all of you for the welcome! We moved to a small farm (26 acres) in 2002. When I saw the barn, I knew I was going to be able to “grow” my kitty family. We live next to an old junk yard. My first feral came from there – she showed up here and I started putting food out for her. When the others in the junk yard found out, the frenzy started! So – that’s how the outdoor kitties came here. I have trapped and fixed all 8 that stay here permanently. I have new visitors frequently and when they keep coming consistently, I start working with them on getting them used to me. Then the good old trap comes out and they get fixed! I’m now branching out and helping others with the ferals that they come in contact with. I’d be a vet but I couldn’t stand losing little furbabies! So I’m just trying to help all that I can – and I am sure I’m going to need some good advice and comfort every so often – so I’m glad I found this group!

Welcome, murlynne, wish I had a handy barn. I know I would have more cats, then. Sigh, meantime, I love the one I have. Her name is Molly and I can’t imagine how I ever lived without her.

Murlynne, those ferals have much happier and longer lives with you around! TNR is truly a humane way to handle a thorny problem.

Might I suggest leaving the trap within sight (and within easy sniffing distance) of the food station at all times? Just jam the door open with a piece of rebar slid through the bars, or something. That way, the cats are more accustomed to the trap’s presence, when it comes time to start baiting it in preparation for trapping.

Murlynne – welcome, welcome. You are in good company here with like minded souls. I also am the crazy cat lady with 21 indoors and a small colony outside. I am only a grandmother to 5 furry kits that rule my son’s home. Wish I had a barn or outbuilding of some sort but live in a mobile home park. Had one cat for 15 years and then life changes put me in this park with established ferals. Started feeding and learning and then doing TNR too. My Zasha is now 18-1/2 years old and is learning to tolerate, but hates, all the newcomers.

If you ever have questions this is the place to ask. There are so many here that work with ferals, rescues and fostering and the information given out is priceless. TDK made me feel like a normal person. Before I found this site I felt scared and alone because I had no idea so many felt the same as me about helping the helpless cats.

Good idea, anncetera2! I didn’t think of that! I’m always hoping I get the new kid in the trap instead of one of the regulars! I knew joining this group was a good idea! Thanks!

Welcome murlynne, as others have said you are not a ‘crazy cat lady’ you are a kind-hearted person who wants to do something for others. I envy your acreage and especially your barn! Hope one day to be in the same position to do that. For now, I just feed some ferals, a lonely heeler dog w/her pups, and my outside patio kitty. Again, welcome this is the best site on the web…thanks Kittenmaster for making this possible ;P >^..^<
