I recently adopted a approximately 5 week old kitten from the nearby animal control. They told us he was 5 weeks. (I know too young to be from mom) If we didn’t adopt him, I think they would have put him to sleep. We took him to the vet the day after we got him because I was so worried about him. He has had mostly loose, normal colored stools since we got him. A few have been mushy textured, and a few have been hard and tube-like. He also vomited once (the doc said I fed him too much and he was probably stressed) oops. The animal control wasn’t feeding him kitten food. So I started him on some soft kitten food. He likes the dry Kitten food we got him better. He eats and drinks very enthusiastically. He definitely has an appetite. Also isn’t dehydrated or anemic. Plays very well, he is very vocal and seems all around like a happy and healthy kitten. Explores and pounces and loves to play with my ferrets, (I keep a close eye on them, my ferrets would never harm him, just being cautious.) The diarrhea keeps bothering me. I’m guessing it is because of the transitions of food, especially since he was probably still drinking moms milk when he was found. The stool also smells and he has bad kitty toots. The vet did a fecal exam and found no parasites, as of yet. But still gave him a dewormer. He uses the litter box very well, and has had only 2 small accidents. Because of the loose stools he has poo on his bottom that I have to clean up. He isn’t straining at all. Frankenstein weighs about a pound, I can feel his ribs and bones, I’m worried he isn’t eating enough even though he gets fed a lot during the day (small meals) and gets fed when he cries. I feel like a new mom, I’ve never had a cat before, especially one this young. I don’t know what to expect and I don’t want him to get sick or pass away. This is causing great worry, and anxiety for me.

What should I be feeding him, milk replacement?

what are things I should expect?

Any warning signs that I should watch out for? Illnesses, anything they can catch? Symptoms?

What is normal activity for a kitten this young?

    Other quirks I don’t understand:
Wakes me up in the middle of the night to play. First he starts purring very loudly and then he will gently bite my nose, and fingers. I don’t understand this behavior. Should I not allow the biting, I don’t want it to become a habit.

    Thank you in advance,
    Ariann and Frankenstein

Sounds like you’re doing fantastically well, Ariann, and that you have rescued a lovely and lively kitten from being put down. The diarrhea and stinkiness is probably a result of the change in food. Try to keep feeding him wet kitten food as well as dry kitten food, even if he likes the latter better, as dry food 24/7 for male cats is not good for them.He probably does have worms, most stray kittens do (they get them from their mums) and that’s probably another reason for the stinky stools. However, if they go on being really stinky, take him back to the vet and ask him to test for coccidia and giardia if he hasn’t already. Little and often is the best way to feed him at the moment. If you want to, you can mix some kitten milk replacement formula into his wet food; he doesn’t need to be on it now he’s weaned but if he likes it, it will help feed him up a bit. You can also get a supplement called Nutrical for kittens, it’s a paste that is specially designed to provide extra nutrients for malnourished or sick kittens or those that aren’t eating. As long as he keeps putting on weight steadily, keeps being alert and playful and keeps eating, you don’t have much to worry about.

Gentle nipping is playful and a sign of affection, and possibly what he would do to his mum to get her to give him some milk — because he doesn’t have any mum or siblings to teach him manners, you are going to have to gently dissuade him from biting you because if he grows into an enormous boy, it’s not going to be so much fun for you later down the line! Try to quickly dissuade or distract him.

Otherwise just keep doing what you’re doing. At about 8 weeks, he’ll probably need to start his shots (talk to your vet about this) and it’s a good idea to get him microchipped. Good luck with your little one, sounds like you’re doing it right!

Yes we go to the vet again Sunday, she’ll probably do more stool tests because they are still loose. He was immediately microchipped when I got him. I don’t understand why some people don’t do that, I found a puppy 2 weeks ago, took him to the vet he wasn’t microchipped. Eventually found his owners (yay!) we bought a sort of kitty plan he gets his shots, and will be neutered as soon as possible. Right now he is sleeping next to me, he pretty much doesn’t like to be anywhere else but right by me. He is just the sweetest thing. Thank you for the help. I’ll go and get that stuff tomorrow, I work at petsmart, shouldn’t be too hard to find (; I will post an update when we go to the vet.

    Ariann,

Great work on rescuing this wee kittah. Are you still giving him milk or milk replacement? That causes loose stools in kittens and most adult cats. I hope this solves the issue.

Nipping is a means of getting your attention but you need to nip it in the bud (no pun intended). He is learning what he can get away with and you want to teach him good manners while he’s a kit. Do get him a scratching board and toy to chase around.

    Best of luck

congrats dear! i had a kitten who was too skinny. i bottle fed him a mixture of milk and molasses along with canned food and dry biccies. he grew to be a very muscular healthy cat and lived his years till the time came.

ugh! I tried to get an appointment tomorrow, instead of Sunday. His little rectum is protruding like the end of a hot dog. It looks a little sore, slightly red. Not sure if it is a prolapse of some sort. And its leaking! I cant put him anywhere with out little spots following him. The same color as his poop. But I know its not just happening after using the litter box. Ill clean it gently, and 15 minutes later there is some more leakage. It smells horrid. He still has diarrhea. Its more of a mushy texture and not so watery. but right at the end it gets hard and tube-like. almost looks like an earth worm, or some kind of worm. But not like a internal parasite, tapeworm, or hookworm. Its big not tiny. He is eating, drinking, and playing fine. I gave him some pumpkin to add some fiber. Im so worried about him. I dont want to lose this little guy. I have so much anxiety, its hard for me to leave him. Close to tears when I think about him suffering. I just want this all to be fixed. Maybe he has Coccidia, or however that is spelled.

Also he is getting some slight eye boogers and a little dark crusty stuff by his nose. is he showing symptoms of an URI? I feel so stupid for not knowing and worrying so much.

arianne, not everyone is born knowing how to care for acts, in fact, none of us do. it comes thru experience. some people just don’t have as much experience as others, nothing to feel stupid over. <<hugg>> and the fact that u worry so much over ur precious baby shows u really love him. and it’s good you’re here, because you are requesting help from knowledgeable people. ;p

would u be able to get him to the vet hospital or maybe to another vet? if you can’t get to your vet in time, it may be time to get yourself a backup vet. always better safe than sorry. i dont have experience with this particular case, but ti *does* seem like it may possibly be a prolapse or some infection. the vet is the best judge, but if he’s playing and eating, then hopefully you’re doing soemthing right. keep up the great work.

Blimey, don’t feel bad about not knowing stuff, the only things I know come from some years spent volunteering at a local shelter, fostering kittens for them and having had cats all my life, anything out of the ordinary and we all need a vet! I would leave off the pumpkin, he’s very young for that and it sounds like he might have been straining a bit too much on the poop side, hence the sore red bottom. I would also try to feed him wet food, it has plenty of water in it to replenish what he’s losing through the diarrhea, whereas dry food sucks the moisture out of his system and can dehydrate him more quickly. But as long as he’s still eating and drinking, those are good signs.

I do think you should try and get him back to the vet ahead of his scheduled appointment if you can but if he’s playing and feeding normally in the meantime, then there can’t be anything too wrong. I wonder if he has blocked anal sacs or something, they smell dreadful. It could be that he has a little cold, just wipe his eyes and nose gently (cold tea is soothing and antiseptic for his eyes) and check it out with the vet when you can. At only five weeks, he is bound to have some issues, and you are entitled to worry, you are his mum now. He is not suffering! He is eating and playing and has a wonderful new mum who is doing everything possible for him.

I talked to a rescue center who happened to save the rest of my kittens siblings. Today he isn’t doing well. He hasn’t played, won’t drink water. But will eat, he is getting wet food whenever he wants, and I’ve put more water in it. He is extremely congested and will sneeze and cough. I put him in a steamy bathroom twice today to get him to decongest. He won’t make any wheezy sounds unless he is eating or moving around. I also wipe his nose and eyes with a warm rag. They both are watering, but it’s clear as of right now. He has only pooped once, and another small bit today. It is hard. He seems to be straining slightly. The rescue center that saved his siblings said they have coccidia, we will be treating that tomorrow. And one of the kittens is close to death because of what the vet thinks is bowel impaction from a worm infestation. Im hoping my little one will not get an impaction. But straining while he is trying to go isn’t helping my worrying.

If I understand correctly, you’re taking your kitty to a vet tomorrow? I hope so and that they can help your kitty to a full and speedy recovery.

i would try some liquid kitten formula with a nursing bottle –

    http://www.petfooddirect.com/product/13020/PetAg-Nursing-Kit-for-Cats,-Dogs-and-Small-Animals?utm_source=pricegrabber&utm_medium=cse&Extcid=CSEPG

and see if you can get the little fella to go that way. i had kittens and cats who for various reasons weren’t drinking, and it was starting to affected them. i bottle fed them, and it helped. be prepared that you will probably have to do it several times a day for a few days until the little guy starts drinking on his own again. but try it. u can get the bottles i suggested at petco and other pet stores too. petco, petland, petsmart, etc. will probably have the formula too.

    u can try this too

and try this of course –

you might want to find soemthing with colostrum, which will help gently lossen the stool a bit.

we recently were dsicussing formula on another thread here, and there was an ingredient that was highly reccomended. sadly, it escapes my mind at the moment.

Yes I tried to get him in today and Friday. It wasn’t severe enough for me to take him to the emergency vet since he is still eating, walking and talking. He is just sleeping a lot. And so congested. He isn’t mouth breathing. Eating so nutrical and doesn’t seem to be dehydrated yet. His gums look good and his skin comes back into place. We put a good amount of water in his food. And his good is almost gone. I’m not worried about dehydration for now. But I will try the formula and find something with colostrum in it. He just wants to be held and cuddled right now. Like a sick child. Still is purring and meowing. Thank you all so much you wouldn’t believe how much you have helped.

Hopefully you can get him to the vet today, as per his scheduled appointment, because it does sound like he is getting sicker. Not playing and sleeping a lot are definitely signs that he should see the vet sooner rather than later. Please let us know how it goes, we will be worried about him. He looks like a wee darling in your photo. Does he have a name?

Adding the tag, URI, just a note that the tags need to be separated by commas so that they just need to be clicked on to take readers to previous threads on the subject, otherwise they’re treated like one long complicated tag word.

Thank you. We go to his appointment in a couple hours. Yes, his name is frankenstein. That is him in the picture, his dad is in the military. He loved sitting in his big pockets. He is playing, running, and meowing this morning. Still not drinking, but is crying because he is hungry. I don’t want to feed him, afraid this will make him more constipated or impacted. Going to pick up some kmr while at the vet. His breathing is still congested. And he still hasn’t went poop. Hopefully we can get him antibiotics, and maybe some sort of laxative.

Hi Ariann – coccidia is highly contagious, so if his siblings have it, Frankenstein should be treated for it as well.
Glad you are able to see the vet today.
Frankenstein is a cutie – hope you send his pic to The Daily Kitten.

The vet put my mind at ease! She said he is looks good considering his age and what he has went through. Frankenstein is a walking pharmacy at the moment. 3 medicines. Albon, clavamox, and lactulose, (might be spelled wrong) but he went potty right when we got home!! So I will only give him the lactulose if I think he needs it. He weighs a whopping 1 pound! And yes we call him Frankie for short. We’re not in the clear but it’s looking good for this little one! (:
