Hey All,so Bagheera is 10 weeks old now, the vet thinks she is younger than that because she is so little, barley over 2 poun ds. I disagree because I know she was around 2 weeks when I got her and I have had her for 8 weeks. He thinks she is 7- 8 weeks which isn’t Mathematically possible. Anyways I can’t seem to get her weaned off her bottle. She is eating wet kitten food but still wants to suck on her bottle about 3x a day. She eats 1 – 1 1/2 of the small cans a day. She isn’t a big eater. I have tried putting her milk on a spoon and have her lap it up, she is not interested. I have put her milk in a bowl and again not interested. She munches on a little hard food in between wet food feedings. Also I can’t get her to drink water. I have tried everything from putting some on my finger, dipping her paw in it, changing her water bowl to several different things. She just sniffs it and walks away. I know she gets moisture from her wet food but before she goes to her forever home I need her to be drinking water because I am not sure her new owners will be feeding her wet food for every meal. I think wet food will only be a treat for her then. So any advice for getting her completely off the bottle and drinking a little water would be appreciated.

I wish I had some good solid advice for little Bagheera and her bottle. She is tiny and loves her bottle. She isn’t ready to wean herself from it yet and I guess I am weird about it, but don’t like to push them until they are. My Willow was a big boy and did not want to give his up either. Sometimes the smallest of the litter just needs that extra one on one ‘mommy’ time, and they love that contact between you and them at feeding time. I don’t know who she will be going to obviously, and you may not either, but I hope someone recommends that she get wet food everyday and not just for a treat. It’s just got the moisture she needs, even when she is an adult. She can have a dry meal as a treat, if she likes it. Maybe someone else here on TDK has experience with weaning a baby who doesn’t want to give it up. 🙂

Wee Bagheera will let you know when she’s weaned. But to get her to start drinking water, add some to her bottle.

KZ & PG, I think the same way. She will give up the bottle when she is ready. Maybe I will just hold onto her a little longer until she feels like she doesn’t need it anymore. I have had her for this long a few more weeks won’t matter. She loves her bottle time. She jumps on my lap and purrs so loudly and rubs her face and body all over my face. It is extremely sweet. I tried watering down her bottle and she refused it. She even gave me a “What in the world is this? I am not drinking that.” look. Maybe I will try again next week. Yes, I do know who she is going to. She will be treated like a princess with them. But I think the wet food being a bit expensive for them is the reason they will be doing mostly dry. When I finally send Bagheera to them I am providing a case or two of wet kitten food to help them and to ensure Bagheera gets wet food until she is 20 weeks.

Christina, you are a much stronger person than I. I get so attached to my babies, there is no way I could let them go. When they rub their little faces on me and kiss me and purr….well, it just undoes me.

If she rubbed her wee face on me, I would be smitten for life. Bless you for having the strength to foster her.
