Hi! so, a little bit of background:

I have never had a cat, and on tuuesday I was moving from my las house to my new one when I saw this little kitty trying to cross the road (which would surely get her killed). so I stopped the car and picked her up… so, new house, new kitten.

I want to make it clear that she is very young and friendly, which makes me think that either someone threw her out or she lost her human family.

now, its been four days and things are going downhill with this kitty. she will not stop meowing even when lifted (at night this is the worst thing), she used her litterbox but now will poop wherever, she climbs my legs ALL the time… shes driving me crazy.

I want to solve these problems because shes really sweet and great company (I live alone, so I like having her arround). but it needs to stop (specially the pooping wherever she wants part).

    please help

    Hi Fernando,

Welcome TDKland-we’re the furriest blog around.

I suspect your wee kitten is lonely. You’re her new purr papa and she feels safe with you and wants to be with you-all the time. To start with set up a nest for her with blankies and a shirt with your smell on it. Place a heating pad covered by a towel to keep her warm and make sure the heating pad is set on low. If you don’t have a heating pad use warm water bottles. Be sure she has a cool area to move to if she gets to hot. Give her a soft toy to snuggle with in her nest. Kittens don’t digest food when they’re cold. All of these actions will give her confidence and reassurance.

TDKers swear by Goats’ milk. There is the liquid in the dairy aisle and the concentrate in the baking aisle. The concentrate is mixed 1:1 with water. You give this to her in a bottle with an appropriate opening. If she’s chewing on the nipple then she’s not getting enough to eat. Again, cats are lactose intolerant and Goats’ milk is low in lactose. It should settle her tummy and give nutrients and probiotics. You can start making her a gruel around 5-6 weeks by mixing Goats’ milk with wet kitten food.

The stress of a new life is a factor in her pooping. Put her in her nest and stay with her until she’s settles down. Set up a litter pan that’s low to the ground. Get some non-clumping, unscented litter. Kittens like to play in the litter and can eat the litter. The clumping kind can clump in her tummy. Pick up some enzymatic cleaner and use it on the areas where she has pooped. This will get rid of the odor and she won’t want to use that spot again. 15 after every time she eats put her in the litter pan. Be gentle but persistent. She’ll figure it out.

Fernando, do you know about how old this kitten is? She is probably old enough to eat wet cat food, so that’s a good place to start. She is used to having her kitten brothers and sisters around, and now she is alone except for you. She will get used to that, all cats do, but until she does she is just meowing (crying) because she is lonely. Lots of love and attention is what she needs. Her litterbox needs to be low to the ground so she can get into and out of it easily. Cats also do not like strong scented litter. Remember, she probably doesn’t know what a litterbox is for, so when she poops (if it is outside the box) put it in the box. Place her in the box, she will smell it and figure it out. Cats are smart and don’t want to make messes outside of their boxes, and it’s instinctual for them to bury their poop because in the wild a predator would hunt them down if they smell them out. Thank you for rescuing this little kitten. Just give her some time, everything is new to her now. 🙂

Also, get a cat bed and place it in the bed with you. She will be much happier if she can be near you. Just make sure you don’t roll over on the kitten and smother her. That’s why I mention putting her in a cat bed of her own up by your head, where it’s safer for her.

Thanks a lot for your help! I believe shes about a month and something old, shes barely larger than my hand and she’s kind of clumsy, but when she arrived I gave her dry cat food and she ate it happily, So im guessing she’s not that young either (?), she’s going to meet her vet on monday, and I think he will be able to tell me 😀

Today we had a lovely day because we spent all afternoon in bet watching tv and she was completely quiet and playful and it was great.

I built her a little nest out of old rags when she arrived, but it has not got anything warm or with my scent on it (which explains why she would rather sleep in my hockey jersey).

I will put into action your tips and Im sure we will both thank you later on for your help.

Can we see a pic? And what did you name her? I have a new kitten as well. She is 5 weeks.

It is a learning time for us as well. Also found on side of road. Good luck and I am so happy she found a living forever home.

updating on this thread, she has a name now! shes called Bastet, like the egyptian cat-godess of the home, and she’s behaving better and better with each passing day (in the nights she still wants to play sometimes, butwe are working on that hahaha).

    Thanks again for your help!

Your wee kit is adorable! She’s looking at you as if you’re an unfinished work i.e. fully trained cat slave, purrson. The Egyptian goddess Bastet represents cats, home, fire, music, dance and some Bacchanalia. It sounds like your wee partay grrrl is living up to her namesake.

It is difficult to ignore them when they want to play at night but I’ve got my gang to understand no play when mom’s sleeping. Of course, I often wake up with toys on my pillow or bed. 😉

Thanks for the picture and I don’t care about the background just your Bastet.

Hang around and join the gang!

we are getting along quite fine actually, even if she’s become quite bitey lately hahaha shes quite fun to have around and since I got her some toys and a scratcher, shes reduced her biting… which is great!

Yesterday she spent a while in the patio with me while I was doing the laundry, and I managed a nice picture of her!

Goodness she’s cute! Looks like she took well to her name and is posing like an Egyptian goddess. She has some big ears to grow into and I love that super-floofy baby kitty fur! 🙂

Oh my ! ! What a wee sweetie Bastet is. I am guessing that by now she has totally stolen your heart. 🙂
It sounds like the two of you are on the way to a life long cat & staff relationship. 😆
The biting could be because she is teething, she will need something like a chew toy or even a cardboard box for her to chew on and shred in the case of the box. My Shadz chewed through a good size brown cardboard box and we had bits of box all over for a short time but it did save on chewed body parts.

she has definitely stolen my heart! and yeah! I got her a chew toy, which actually helped, now each time she starts biting I just pick up the toy and throw it far away so she will go after it and bite it instead of me hahahahaha (it also helps her with the exercise) 😀

Wee Bastet is quite the model too. I’m glad you’re settling into a life together. You should submit her as The Daily Kitten. The link is at the top under Add your kitten.
