Hey everyone basically my cat kiara gave birth to 5 kittens, but 1 passed away during labour so we have 4 instead. They are 1 week old today, but been sleep more than 4hrs now and not fed. This is because my cat only goes to her 4 kittens when they start meowing once they do and are not sleeping, she goes to them and feeds them, once they stop meowing and go to sleep, she comes out of the box and sleeps outside. Is this normal for my cat to do? and does it mean that the 4 kittens only are hungry when they start meowing? Please reply asap back will be very thankful for replies and happy to provide any further information.

Hi, Manni, welcome to TDK. I have always found that mama cats are the best ones to look after their babies and this sounds quite normal to me. Even mama cats need a break from their babies! I would let mama cat look after them unless you think something has gone wrong, for instance, that her milk has dried up or she is not producing enough. At one week old, if they were being bottle-fed, they would need to be fed 6 times a day, which is once every four hours. So yes, I would tend to wake the babies gently, if they haven’t eaten for four hours, and let them squeak for mama, or I would gently pick mama up and put her back into the box with them. If you are worried, best thing is to talk to your vet. Best of luck with your mum and her babies.

I agree with JCat. Momma(cat) knows best :). So long as the kitties looks plump and their tummies full, i shan’t be too worried.
