Can somebody offer advice on what I should do about a stray? About a week ago, a sad and very thin cat started hanging out in my parent’s back yard. We felt bad for him so we put out some cat food and water. He looks much better now and seems to have more energy but he NEVER leaves the yard. He runs off if we try to approach him (but he’s back 5 minutes later). He hangs out under the window and looks in often, especially when he knows it’s meal time. We want to catch him and take him to the vet to make sure he is fixed but we’re not sure if we should do this in case he does belong to somebody. Can cats become lost and not find their way home? If so, we will try to find his owner. Also, I’m wondering if he is feral and never had an owner. Is there a way to definitely tell? I’ve heard that most vets won’t work on feral cats. Is this true? We really want to get this cat fixed, especially if he turns out to be a she! Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

Eileen, my advice is to get a trap and catch the poor cat. Some really good advice on http://www.alleycat.org

Alley Cat Allies is a wonderful source of info for all stray and feral cat issues. Some vets will work with ferals as long as you let them know. My vet told me if I have a feral that need attention I don’t even need to make an appointment because they understand the difficulty of precise timing of the capture. Just call around to all vets near you. The cat runs because he is afraid of you but the fact that he/she stays in the yard and looks in the window is probably an indication that he is an abandoned or lost cat not a true feral. No matter the cats situation you have every right to capture and neuter if he is living in your yard now.

    Hope this helps
