Great site. Good info. My cat Opie, began to suffer from fatty liver disease in December and died in Jan. He was a bit overweight, stopped eating for whatever reason and lost a few pounds. I hand fed him and brought him to the vet for various tests a few times, but eventually he took a turn for the worse and died overnight at the animal hospital Jan. 10. He was 12.
Anyway, I took a real interest in the quality of pet foods since then. I was determined to not let this happen to my 12 year old Alex, who normally ate less than Opie and is not overweight. I was shocked to find out just exactly what goes on to the average pet food, including the better known brands like Iams and Hills.
While on the Amazon site, I ordered the book by Ann Martin called, “Food Pets Die For: Shocking Facts About Pet Food.” Here is an excerpt:
Great book, but very disturbing. It grossed me out to find out that euthanized pets wind up in rendering process (not to mention their collars, flea collars and Lord know what else). I was also (but shouldn’t have been) shocked that there is little oversight of the pet food industry by the Government.
You can watch videos on pet food, including Ann Martin, on Youtube.
Needless to say, my Alex is now only fed Wellness brand wet food and Newman’s Own dry Organic food.
Be vigilant when it comes to feeding your pet(s). They will thank you and you may save costly trips to the Vet.

I’m sure it is a very hot topic, especially after the last major recall! Fortunately I wasn’t using any foods that were recalled. At the time, they were eating Whiskas and Purina One.
