I am so mad at my dog right now. I had gone outside with a bag of eggshells that I was going to put around my rosebushes. Shiva jumped down from the kitty bed onto the bricks next to me. I didn’t realize the bag would scare her but the poor kitty took off toward my car when she saw the plastic bag.

She would have just hidden under my car but my stupid dog had to start chasing her. I yelled at my dog to try to make her stop chasing Shiva but she wouldn’t listen and chased the cat into the neighbors yard. By now Shiva is panicked and running circles around the neighbors back yard with my dog barking at her. Finally, after nearly running into the next yard with a couple of pit bulls that would have torn her to pieces, she ran toward my neighbors house. I think she is under their house but, without going under their house, I have no way of knowing for sure.

I made my dog go to her doghouse and went up toward my neighbors house calling for Shiva. But my neighbors decided they wanted to talk and then the man went to the back of his house to call Shiva which probably scared her even more. Then, Mamma kitty came out and, as I tried calling Shiva again after the man finally left her alone, the lady started calling Mamma kitty every time I would call Shiva. I know that hearing their voices probably made Shiva even more scared. I was so mad at my neighbors who apparently didn’t listen or care when I told them their voices would scare the cat.

I just told them I wasn’t feeling well and walked back to my house. I keep going out and calling for Shiva but she won’t come home. I can’t stand to even look at that stupid dog of mine right now and, even though she keeps coming up to me begging for attention, I just tell her to get away from me. I won’t feel better until Shiva comes home.

    So sorry owlwatcher. Shiva will be okay as long as she stays away from the pit bulls. That breed of dog should be banished permanently. As for the idiot neighbors. I’ve got a couple of those as well that don’t listen unless you club them over the head. Just keep calling her. I know she’ll come back home. {{{Hugs}}}

Owlwatcher, I’m sorry that Shiva got scared off! She will surely come back home, but all the excitement (the bag, the dog, all the yelling) has got her all hunkered down until she feels less anxious.

Your dog didn’t mean to scare Shiva. Please don’t take it out on her; she didn’t mean to scare the cat or make you mad. Is there some way to keep your dog restrained or indoors, long enough to find a way to encourage Shiva to come back? Is there a particular food Shiva likes best, that you could entice her with?

Stay calm Owlwatcher, I’m sure Shiva is just being cautious..when things have quited down I’m sure she’ll be headed home..and annceter2 is right…I’m sure your dog didn’t mean to scare Shiva. Keep us posted.

This afternoon as it is starting to get dark, sit outside with some really smelly wet cat food and see if you can sweet talk her to you. She will probably be hungry by then and ready for her nice warm house.

I have made up with my dog but I am still not too happy with her. My neighbors finally went back into their house so now everything is nice and quiet. I will keep going outside and calling for her.

As far as food goes, Shiva is so finicky that really nothing can entice her unless it is close to dinnertime. All I can do is wait.

Suzie, pit bulls are not bad dogs. I had one for a short time but couldn’t keep him because he was so high energy. My mom’s friends adopted him and he was the perfect dog. The kids loved him dearly – especially the oldest one who used to wrestle with him. The whole family was devastated when the dog passed away (old age). I was too even though I hardly even got the chance to say hi to him after they adopted him.

The neighbors pit bulls are really very good dogs. They never cause any problems and the neighbors keep them in their yard – except for rare occasions when the one gets loose. Shiva would probably be okay over in that yard as long as the white dog didn’t see her. The other dog might chase her but he has never harmed any of my animals and he has gotten into my yard a few times and mostly ignores my animals. The neighbors on the other side of me have one of the sweetest dogs I have ever seen. She comes out to greet me every morning when I leave for work or school and nearly wags herself into two pieces when she sees one of us because she loves people so much. But just because she is a pit bull most people hate her and I have seen at least two cars try to run her over when she comes outside to greet me. I have actually ran out into the middle of the street yelling at somebody who swerved over to try and hit the dog. She doesn’t deserve this kind of treatment just because she is a pit bull.

Well, I am going to go outside and call Shiva again. I’ll keep you all updated.

owlwatcher…I’m glad the neighbors dogs can be trusted. I guess it depends on the area & the type of people that own them. I’ve never come across pitbulls that didn’t show overly aggressive behavior. We have a neighbor right now in our park that has been seen dabbling in drug-dealing since they’ve moved in(they’ve been here less than 4 mos.). They have brought an adult pitbull in which they keep tied up to their deck railing when they aren’t at home(the park once had a ban on owning pitt bulls in the park). In order for half the residents to check their mail, they must pass by this person’s yard to get to the mailboxes. That pittbull hears anyone on the other side of the bushes walking by & it lunges & beats up against the fence, scary the begeebies out of you. I & others feel it’s only a matter of time before the dog breaks loose & injures someone. Our city has just passed an ordinance against keeping your animals chained or tied in the yard for more than 3 hrs. This family leaves the dog tied up upwards of 10 hrs. So you can see what I mean when I speak rough of the breed. Didn’t in any way mean to offend anyone. I’ve just seen nothing but travesties in & around where I live.

Suzie, I’ve seen pit bulls trained like that too. These dogs can be trained to be very aggressive and there are some people who take advantage of that. But then again, I remember when dobermans were the dogs that people owned when they wanted a mean dog. After that it was rottweilors, now it’s pit bulls. If pit bulls were banished, then it would be a different breed of dog that would be exploited for its ability to be an aggressive fighter.

Pit bulls are extremely intelligent, hi-energy dogs that make great family dogs and wonderful protectors. I feel so bad for them when I see somebody mistreating and exploiting them by making them nothing more than a weapon or turning them into fighting dogs. It’s the idiots who own them for the wrong reasons that should be banished.

Exactly what our new neighbors are doing with their pitt bull. It’s anchored down outside. They have no business owning it if it’s out there more than they are home. Because of his questionable behavior since moving in,quite a few of the neighbors(including myself) believe he has something to hide within the house. Drugs, cache of money, etc. A visitor of one neighbor even saw him walking out late one night with a gun in his hand. Because of that, this visitor no longer comes to see her friend in the park out of fear. The manager refuses to report them to the property owners(she really is uneducated in management field). And alot of the neighbors, tho they’ve seen themselves what’s going on, are intimidated & afraid to report them. So alot of them put blinders on,& the bad guys win. It’s sad, but,is happening in society all the time these days. Sorry for the long post you guys.

    Shiva came back!!

I saw her out in the neighbor’s back yard and called her and she came running back home as fast as she could with her tail still three times its normal size!

She is contentedly resting outside in the cat bed now and Trinity (my dog) is happy that I am no longer mad at her.

Susie, on the suspicious neighbor, can’t someone make an anonymous tip to the local police/sheriff department?

Yea!! Happy ending to a scary episode. Thank goodness.

My daughter works for animal control, and although pits have a bad rep, it has been her experience that rotts are much more dangerous.

It’s all in how they’re trained and treated. Even the gentle Great Danes have been known to turn aggressive.

Shiva is an indoor/outdoor cat. She spends as much time as she wants to outside during the day and I usually make her and Mamma Kitty come in for the night at around 10:00pm.

Aristabobbi, I think about 90% of most dog behavior is environmental, and about 10% is genetic. Lots of people bred Rottweilers that shouldn’t have been bred; it happens with every single dog breed that gets wildly popular. Over time, I can think of some of the breeds so affected… German shepherds, collies, Dobermans, cocker spaniels, Irish setters, Dalmatians, Rottweilers, and so forth. Even Labradors and golden retrievers have been overbred, from time to time. It’s a terrible shame when it happens; it affects the entire breed for generations.

And it’s true that abuse, neglect, and misuse can change a loving creature into a creature that will do anything to please its master.

owlwatcher…Happy to hear Shiva is home.

AZDEB…I’m about ready to make a call or 2 myself. Of course, anonymous. If I were to be too loud & bring attention to my own yard, some might call me a horder. Of course, thaty isn’t the case. All animals are quite healthy considering they’re feral. But, we do have an animal limit in our park.

Congratulations about Shiva coming home! This is wonderful news! Please give her a kiss for me.

About cats and dogs: when I was growing up, our next door neighbor had a boxer and a Jack Russell terrier. Our neighbor kept his dogs in his well-fenced back yard, and they were never allowed to run loose. However, these two canines tormented and killed any and all cats who went over the fence into their yard.

Until we got a large black cat named Junior.

Junior had Siamese blood, a scar across his face, a vicious temper, and weighed 22 pounds. He loved my father and he loved me, and that was about it. Junior was an inside/outside cat (we simply could not keep him inside), and it was only a matter of time before the neighbor’s dogs met our cat.

One Saturday morning, Junior climbed over the high fence into the yard. The two dogs attacked him. Junior ripped the boxer’s left ear off, and seconds later the Jack Russell terrier was screaming in terror and trying to climb the chain link fence to get away from our cat.

Our neighbor called my dad, and said, “I don’t think my dogs will ever bother another cat again.”

After that day, Junior would stroll through their yard with impunity, and the dogs would run screaming to hide in their dog houses.

I think the two dogs were huddled together, praying the rosary.
