Hi, everyone. I found your site while looking for some resources to help with raising my new kitten. My fiance and I found him outside, and saved him from a hawk. He’s only about six weeks old, but was obviously never handled by people before. In just 48 hours he’s come a long way in trusting people, and even actively seeks out cuddles with my hand. I’ve named him Thurman.

I’ve read in other threads that I should refrain from picking him up, but that I should just continue to play with him and pet him… as he gains more trust in people. We have two other cats, but we’re keeping little Thurman in another room until we think it’s safe to introduce them (albeit through the grate on his carrier).

I’ve not had a kitten this small in over 20 years, and never one that was essentially feral when we got him. Are there any other suggestions you might have for us?

If Thurman is willing to be picked up, then go ahead and do so. You shouldn’t pick up a kitty who is obviously doesn’t want to be, but let him set the pace for socialization. If he wants to be petted, pet him. If he wants to cuddle, then go ahead and cuddle him.

I have two little ones that are about 10 weeks now and we’ve had them since about 4 or 5 weeks old and always held them. I’d say do whatever he’s comfortable with. If he will let you do it, if not take your time with it. I don’t see any reason not to unless it scares him. Good luck with your little guy,he’s a cutie;)

Thanks for the replies, guys. Ouch.. that rhymed.

Anyway, he doesn’t really like to be picked up yet.. but we’ve only just started to get him used to people.

What a cute fuzzy, whiskery furball!! :0) Well done for saving the wee fella. I too would say pet him and stuff if he’s happy with it. Would be different if he was snarling at you from under the bed, but if he’s seeking you out, he obviously wants to interact! I think Thurman has definitely fallen on his paws with you :0)

Absolutely adorable !!!!! I love Thurmans little white whiskers and chin. I think it is good he has two other cats to eventually play and iteract with. He may keep some of his feral side, but I bet the other two cats will help a lot with his adapting to socializing. He is such a cutie.

Hi everyone, I too have a new kitten, I rescued her from our garden where the mother abandoned them. Her name is KitKat and she’s about six weeks old. She was so wild and scared when I took her, but it’s been a week now and she has come such a long way! She likes to be with me and play with my hands. She also runs around like a crazy thing, makes me laugh a lot. It’s the first time that I have a cat so I’m still learning all of the stuff cats do differently from dogs. I love her so much, she’s got so much personality and spunk.

24 hours later, and Thrumie is improving at a rapid rate. He’s not running under the dresser every time he sees us move too quickly, and he’s playing like crazy. He’s still a bit nervous, but he’s almost a completely different cat than he was just two days ago.

Also, Hi Jenny. Have any pictures of KitKat?

I think the pick up thing is because of instinct telling him to beware of anything swooping down overhead (like a hawk). Scooping him up from underneath is different, or letting him climb up onto your open palm flat on the floor for instance. Good luck, love the name!

I was just coming in to update on my feral kitten, about 9 weeks old. She’s sleeping in the house for the first time tonight. Today’s the first she would come in off the sun room porch. She hasn’t ventured in very far, but seems really comfy in that space after many hours of quick forays with lots of growling. lol she’s always growling when she’s being brave.

Tonight, I picked her up! I didn’t hold her; just moved her close to the ground from one place to another. She seemed to love it because she wanted a major petting afterwards, including a belly rub! It’s going on 2 weeks..Sunday, I think. Just be patient and let your little one come to you. You’ll know when he’s accepted you as a safe creature…purring, asking to be pet, not minding when you talk and move around or make a strange noise.

Since she’s come in today, she’s “met” my other cats…I just left the door open and the other cats sniffed a lot, and one finally went to check her out. Unfortunately, this little girl growls when she’s being brave, as I said. She walked up to queen cat, sniffed her nose and growled…Reka hissed, and that was that. She ran to hide. Bad Reka then decided to box her in and there was a tiny spat. {{sigh}} Reka was pissy with my other kitten, too, but they’re friends now. The others didn’t react badly, but they wouldn’t step in her domain. Now that she’s coming into THEIR domain, they’re approaching to sniff. You might want to wait on an intro until the kitten is really comfy in his new environment. Even on a good day, introductions can be tricky.
