I just adopted an 8 month old kitten about three days ago. He’s had a habit of hiding under the bed and being a bit nervous in the new place, so I confined him to my room. Today I lured him into a cat carrier and placed him in the living room which he hasn’t gotten to explore yet so I could clean out his hiding spot, vacuum and what not. After about ten minutes or so I brought the carrier back in my room and the kitten just started to freak out! I opened it up immediately to find him convulsing. I got so scared, wrapped him in a towel and waited out the excessive drooling and spasms… After he just meowed and meowed, then went to hiding under the bed again. It’s been ten minutes since it happened and he’s walking around like normal now- sniffing things and rubbing against stuff.

I’ve NEVER experienced this with any cat and I’m so worried. If this is a result of the change in environment and excessive stress then fine, no more carrier for awhile…but he needs to go to the vet and I can’t travel with a seizing cat.

    Edit:
He’s purring and rubbing up against my hand as usual and drinking water like nothing even happened.

    Edit 2:
Granted, it probably was his first time ever in a carrier since the previous owners gave him to me in a blanket…I’ve left the carrier out and open for him to explore. He’s currently sniffing it.

    Hi Alissa,

Welcome to TDK and congrats on your new kitty. I have no experience with this sort of situation. My first recourse would be a vet check. Perhaps you can call the vet and explain the situation and how you are concerned re putting him in the carrier lest this brings on another seizure. Some vets do home visits, but they should be able to let you know how to handle this situation. Other TDKer’s might have some other ideas based on their having way more experience raising kitties. Please keep us updated.

KJ is right first things first ring a local vet and get
An appointment set up of ring the rescue organisation you adopted him from most have their own on site vet..
As you’ve only had him 3 days they still have a duty of care for him.. Ring rescue and check if he was recently wormed or given flea treatments some can cause seizures if a cat had an allergic reaction but this normally occurs within the first 24 hours of treatment..

Cats can have epilepsy disorders and proper diet, stress free environment and medication can help but a vet will need to preform tests to determine if there is an underlying condition.. Always be careful around a cat that has just had a seizure as they can be very confused and lash out without realising what they are doing..

I doubt that the rehoming and new home adjustment has caused this seizure there would have to be an underlying condition of exposure to something that he’s having a bad reaction too.. Some cats are even allergic to new floor carpeting so if by some odd chance you’ve just gotten new carpeting in I’d keep him away from that until he’s seen a vet..

Keep him as calm as possible until he sees the vet..

Best of luck and just remember a lot of people deal with cats with special needs epilepsy in a cat is not a death sentence it just means they’ll have to be indoor only kitty’s 🙂
