He is just being a kitten and playing, your clothes and shoes are something that he needs to ‘play attack’. There are others who have so much more experience than I with kittens, but I would think that re-directing his attention elsewhere would help some.

BanaAsw, see the thread of Playing Time and read the first entry…

Mia is that way too BanaAsw but she likes to attack my towels and of course anything that moves. I took her to the vet a couple of weeks ago and she said her adult teeth were coming in. So she is teething a lot. I say no loudly when she goes for the towels and she usually stops.

I hate to say this, but Cato (who is 5 years old) bites as well. He also claws me. The vet and I have talked about his behavior. The vet says it is male behavior towards a female cat — which he characterized as very dark indeed.

Cato doesn’t do this all the time, but just enough to watch him and not to bother him too much.

I am not saying that your kitten will continue with the biting behavior, but Cato was much, much worse when he was a kitten.

The vet has suggested, if it gets out of hand, that Cato should be declawed and defanged, which should modify his behavior. I was shocked by the vet’s response, but after talking with him, I got his point, although I do not think I would go that far.

    Just a cautionary tale…. Elizabeth

    Be the Momma.

Seriously, learn to hiss and discipline baby like his Mom would. Hiss at him and if he doesn’t get the point hold him down and hiss again until he shows submissive behavior.

This method can be used for other unwanted behaviors as well.

Then, if he is chewing because of teething, give him an appropriate chew toy.

Elizabeth, wow. I’m surprised to see a vet recommending that. Is Cato seriously injuring you?

I can’t help but think there might be other behavioral modifications, much less intrusive than surgery, that would help with Cato’s behavior toward you. Have you thought about looking for a consultation from a professional animal behaviorist? There may be behavioral modification techniques and/or medications that could help change Cato’s behavior somewhat.

I forgot about hissing. ailuromaniac has a good point. When Mia was climbing up on my dining table to jump to the kitchen counter, I growled and hissed at her. If she still jumped up onto the counter, I would hiss and put her down on the floor. I kept hissing and growling at her every time she would try to get on to the kitchen counter. Now she just sits on top of the dining table and hasn’t jumped onto the counter when I am there. I now need to hiss and growl when she jumps up onto the dining table and the coffee table. That is my next project.

Mia is growing finally. She was so tiny when I got her and I just see a very small amount of growth now that she is 5 months old. Sylvester seems to use to her now. He is a lovebug at times and actually likes to come and sit in my lap about once a week.

    Hugs to your kitties.

anncetera2, I have had issues with Cato since he was a baby and shredded me daily. He also has allergies and his behavior gets erratic during the episodes when he is self-mutilating (he over grooms). Lately, he came in contact with fleas (we had been flea free for about six months) and began to eat the flesh off of his legs and began to be combative with me as well. For Cato, it’s all about balance. I do believe the next step will be behavior modification — that and careful flea control 🙂 Elizabeth
