So I am watching after my parents dog for two weeks while they are overseas. The dog is a 2 year old very mild mannered Maltese named Samson, and my kittens are both about 11 weeks. I posted earlier on how to introduce them…it didn’t go quite as planned.

I did it in the kittens bathroom, let my dog in there while I held him. My dog didn’t even seem to notice them and once he did he looked more curious than scared or angry.

The kittens are another story. Scoupe (the more assertive of the two) immediately lept back arched his back, poofed up everywhere, claws out and hissed. Meiko (more timid) arched his back and poofed a little but kind of cowered behind their bed.

My dog seems unphased by the meet, but since my kitties were freaked out I went back into the bathroom & gave them treats and petted them. They are fine now, still in the bathroom but I know they will get very bored in there.

Is the only way around this keeping my dog in other parts of the house while the cats stay in their room? I want more than anything for them to just get along =(

    Ideas…anything!!! Thanks

By giving them treats and petting them after they freaked out, wouldn’t that be like praising them for hmmmm behaviour? You can try to just let them out and it will probably take more than one meeting to get along. Of course they pooofffeeed up, its natural and they don’t know your parents dog wasn’t going to do anything to them. Its to your dog’s credit that he is laid back and it didn’t bother him.

When my daughter visits with her Rottie (9 months old and has excess energy) I just put up a child’s gate to my bedroom so my crew can go in there when they don’t want to be around her, otherwise they took a day or two to ignore her.

haha good point- i feel dumb now for the treats. I tried what you said and so far so good. They are all in the same room and whenever the dog moves they hiss and poof but I think hopefully after a couple days they can relax a little. I’m too protective just afraid someone will get hurt but sometimes i just need to breathe.

They make the strangest sounds…. Scoupe hisses but Meiko makes this sound with his mouth closed that sounds like a wolf. Its the strangest thing…..

Lol, they are trying to show how big & impressive they are to the big bad doggie! It should all work out fine, they may not be best friends but tolerable roommates.
