I have a ten week old kitten, who recently started having diarrhea and vomiting. I’m not sure if it is from the recent food change, we switched from kitten chow to friskes on Friday 6/27. She has just started these symptoms within the last 24 hours. Our other two kittens, one ten weeks the other 14 weeks, have not had these symptoms which is why I am concerned. She has been very sleepy lately. She has been drinking water and eating, very little however. Any advice will be appreciated. Thank you in advance!!

Hi Karah, try some goat’s milk it’s good to settle little ones’ stomachs and diarrhea. Don’t give cow’s milk as it causes diarrhea. It can be found in the cold milk section and in cans in the baking aisle (even Walmart). It is condensed, so mix with water 1 to 1. Your other cats can have it too. If they haven’t been wormed yet, I would get them to the vet and let the vet check them over as a lot of times worms or other parasites cause diarrhea. The biggest thing is to not let her get dehydrated, you could mix pedialyte in with the goat’s milk if you are worried about that as it contains electrolytes.

I will try the goats milk, thank you! She is drinking water so she is staying hydrated. They have not been wormed yet, our vet said he doesn’t do shots on kittens until they are 12 weeks old so I will be getting them wormed in about 2 weeks.

Hey Karah…KZ has given some great advice goats milk is great for kittens ..

When a kitten has diarrhea they can become very dehydrated because their bodies are loosing a lot of fluids so a kitten with diarrhea needs to drink a lot to keep up with the fluid loss.. As for the worming of a kitten. Your vet should have advised to worm at 4 weeks old. Vaccinations do normally wait till 10-12 weeks but the worming should have started at 4 weeks. So I would deffinetly get a wormer from the vet now all you need is the kittens correct weight. A liquid wormer might be best at this late stage because the worm burden might be very high now and you don’t want all the worms dieing off in one go that might cause a blockage in the intestines so a gentle liquid wormer now and in 4 weeks time another dose of a good tablet wormer. A kitten should be wormed every 4-8 weeks untill they are 6 months old and after that wormed regularly depending on their outdoor activity.

Thank you, I will call them back today. I’ve only had the kittens for about a week now, but I know the person I got them from said she hadn’t taken any of them to the vet yet.

I love feeding my cat Lactaid, which is lactose-free milk. I am lactose intolerant just like many cats, so I find it’s a helpful tool when I need to get him to do anything!

The lethargy worries me. At 10 weeks they should be bouncing around! I would follow everyone’s advice about the worming thing. It really sounds like that could be it. Another helpful tip I’ve read is introducing new food to your cats over a slower period of time. So, instead of all at once feeding them an entirely new food, maybe mix the foods together for a couple of days, gradually weening them off the old food. I’ve heard from several sources that switching abruptly can cause digestive upset. I have tried this method myself and Mo never had digestive upset when I switched him from Iams Kitten Formula to his new food. But, I would keep in mind that every cat is different. Not all tummies were created equal!

I hope the little babe starts to feel better soon!

She has been up and playing lately, so I’m guessing she is starting to feel better!(: I am also going to get the worming stuff this weeks to start all three of my babies on it. Thank you so much everyone for your help!! 😀
