Hello, this is my first post on this website and I’m just gonna explain a bit about my cats pregnancy and her beautiful birth 🙂

My bengal-cross cat, named Evie is now 11 months old and 6 days ago today, she gave birth to 6 gorgeous & very healthy kittens, who are all still alive.

We found out she was pregnant when she was just getting fatter and fatter! Although my family and I had planned on getting her spayed, the first time she went into heat we were in the middle of moving houses and everything was chaos. We have a male cat and we saw them playing around but never saw her get caught but clearly, that wasn’t the case. During the first month of her pregnancy, a lot was happening in my life and I just continued feeding her the basic ‘Whiskas Pouches’ – I should have been feeding her kitten food because after all she was still a young cat (at this time we didn’t know she was prengnant)but when she started to really show her big round belly, I started her on Iams Kitten Wet Food, and Whiskas Kitten Dry Food. Until I read up online that whiskas dry and wet food isn’t good for cats at all, because of the high wheat content and very, very low meat content. So after some investigating around the web, I decided I was going to keep her on Iams Wet Kitten Food until she had the kittens then when she gave birth, I was going to give her Bozita wet food, which had incredible reviews and a very high meat content (93!) – http://www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/cats/canned_cat_food_pouches/bozita/bozita/300510

She had a great pregnancy, no sickness and she was over-all very healthy.

Because I never actually knew when she got caught, I couldn’t determine the exact labour date but after figuring dates out, I came up with the 16/07/2012, so the 16th came and passed and there was no signs of labour. I got up during the night and she was meowing quite loudly and licking her genital area, I knew she was more than likely going into labour but didn’t get my hopes up because there had been a few false alarms before. I went back to bed and when I woke up in the morning she was having strong contractions in my bedroom closet and within 10 minutes the first kitten was out, an hour later there was 6 lovely kittens all feeding. It was amazing how easily she dealt with it and how fast they were all out and feeding. She choose a great place too, it’s nice and warm in the cupboard and it’s quiet and away from the other animals 🙂 I tried not to interfere too much with the labour but she seemed to be fine with me being around her and with the 4th and 5th kitten she didn’t lick them so I gently rubbed them with a warm damp cloth to get them stimulated.

It is now the 23/07/12 and tomorrow the kittens will be 1 week old! I had her and the kittens taken to the vet when they were 3 days old because they weren’t gaining very much weight, but they’re all at a very healthy weight just now and 3 of them are even starting to open their eyes, it is the cutest thing ever.

As I said earlier, I’ve started her on Bozita Wet Food & Applaws Kitten Dry Food, because they have the best reviews online and the highest meat content. She seems to really like them and has gained a little bit of weight.

The first few days of looking after the kittens, I was like a crazy cat lady, I couldn’t sleep because I was worried about them and I fed the lightest in weight ones every 2 hours like the vet instructed, and it seemed to help them a lot. Also, 3 times a week I’m mixing in some freshly cooked chicken in her usual meals just for that extra bit of nutrition and she loves it. I can’t wait till the kittens are all running about! There are 3 with bengal-type markings, two with black and ginger tabby markings and one which is just plain grey&white (my lil favourite)

I’m going to make a blog on their progress, once I’ve got it up and running I’ll be sure to post a link here!

Hello, thank you! I have a question, as the kittens are all feeding well and are nearly 1 week old, should they be pooing!? And should it be really visible? Mumma and her babies are all on a light yellow blanket so I’m sure if there was poo I would be able to see… I’ve saw the mum licking their genitals and seen them having a little piddle every now and them but no sign of solid poo yet, should I be worried?

The mother normally eats it–gross but a fact.

Welcome to TDK! May you enjoy the kittens!

If they are gaining weight and have soft bellies and not crying constantly, they are probably pooping and peeing normally. The mom is just licking their behind and ingesting the contents. It is an instinctive behavior that ensures that their feces don’t make an unsanitary environment in the den and give away their location.

Ladysky61 – Their bellies aren’t very soft, quite firm but not solid. They don’t cry much at all, only when the mumma leaves them for a little while, or when they’re scrapping over a nipple. Over all they’re all very content 🙂
