Hey everyone! I’m new to this forum and so desperate for a solution!

Last month, I found a 3 day old baby kitten outside. I named her Peanut and have been taking care of her since. She ate well, and her stool was normal, however, a bit hard. You could hear her little “pushes” in her breath to push the poop out as I would stimulate her to go to the bathroom. I never had a problem with diarrhea, until about 3 weeks ago. I changed Peanut’s formula from 21st Century Milk Replacer to GNC kitten powder (I could not find KMR kitten powder anywhere!), and she didn’t poop for a while. I tried giving her olive oil, and mineral oil, and overfed her, and after a week still no poop. I took her to the vet, and he inserted a long Q-tip in her butt (which she screamed so hard), and he said it was normal. He also dewormed her. That night she finally pooped, and it she was diarrhea. I figured no big deal, she finally went to the bathroom, and the diarrhea must be from the mineral oil, it’ll go away by tomorrow. No…it’s been about 3 weeks now it hasn’t gone away. Two days ago I noticed her diarrhea is now bloody. That’s when I took her right to the vet. He squeezed her stomach, and she screamed so loud you could hear it in the lobby, and he made her poop. She only pooped diarrhea and no blood. He gave me biomox amoxicillin (which is basically penicillin), and diarsanyl (which is basically electrolytes), that I have to give her twice a day. It’s been two days and no improvement. I feel there is more of an increase of blood actually. It gets all over her behind, I don’t know how many times I can keep washing her there. She can’t stand water, and I have scratches all over my wrists and hands. Not to mention poop stains in my bed, I sleep on the couch now. I don’t have another room to offer, and I have an older cat who is a little rough with her still. She is very active, she seems happy, and loves to play, and is a good eater. She shows no sign of being sick, or lethargic, or anything. She just has bloody diarrhea, and it keeps coming out. I’m so desperate, it’s making a mess on everything, AND I’m so afraid of her health. Does anyone have any advice?

Three weeks is a long time to have bloody diarrhea — I think if the antibiotics don’t seem to be kicking in in the next 24 hours, I would be finding another vet to get a second opinion, preferably one who’s good with cats and kittens (can you check round family and friends or your local shelter or even facebook or something for a recommendation for a good cat vet in your area?) It’s great that she seems fine apart from the bloody diarrhea and it’s possibly worms or another parasite (coccidia, giardia) which may be what the antibiotics are for, but, as I said, three weeks is quite a while. The main danger with diarrhea is dehydration so it’s great that you’ve got the diarsanyl, if you run out or need some more, click the pink tag ‘pedialyte’, and scroll through to find a recipe for home-made pedialyte and how to do the tent test to check for dehydration. Antibiotics can also cause diarrhea — sometimes a little plain yoghurt can help. Best of luck.

Thank you, the medication looks like it’s FINALLY starting to kick in.
