My two five week old kittens are healthy and very active, my mamma cat is still nursing them, yet. Neither one is interested in solid food. Should I be cerncerned? And one of them just threw up
A littl while ago, including the tiny piece of solid food she ate . I’m not worried since mamma lily is one very good mamma.

Not every mom is a good mom. In fact, most have no idea what to do when they give birth let alone take care of them.

They are still too young to be weaned so you have to take over. Here in TDKland, we recommend Goats’ milk for kittens. Cats are lactose intolerant and can’t digest cows milk. Goats’ milk is full of nutrients, probiotics and gentler on their tummies. This can also regulate their poop. If you are using the Goats’ milk concentrate, mix it with pedialyte. Pedialyte gives an extra the extra boost. Keep in mind if they seem lethargic put a dab of Karo syrup or honey in their mouth. Sometimes this is all they need to give them the added energy boost to get them eating. A smidgen of mineral oil in their formula can usually help them poop. Here are some links with good information on caring for your wee kits.

Start with Goats’ milk for a couple of days and then make them a gruel. Mix wet cat food with the Goats’ milk and put it in the bottle. Cut the opening big enough so the gruel will flow. Keep them on the gruel for another 2 weeks but wean them off the bottle. By week 8, they should eat wet food from a dish.

    I hope this helps.

My cat who is their mother has no problem taking care of them in fact id say she’s overprotective. She’s nursing them up to 6 times a day if not more.
She was terrified when she was in labor and was super clingy. She almost gave birth to the first one in my lap. After it was born, she started eating the placenta right away but ignored the kitten until she saw me remove the sack from its face, she then took over with the kitten by picking it up and moving to another corner of the nest, then proceeded to clean the baby off and from that moment on she knew what it was and has been taking cAre of them. Ever since . She’s smart and a good mommy. It’s just I read that kittens start eating solid food from around 4 weeks of age. Giving them supplements is not needed at this point because she takes care of thAt. If she ignored them and was just doing her thing then yes I’d be raising them myself but I’m just a kitty grandma . Thank you for your suggestions and input .

Hi Alysha – as long as they are getting milk, they should be okay. My new little guy favored KMR over the wet food I offered, and drank around it when I mixed them together. He is almost 12 weeks old and finally gave up the milk only about 2 weeks ago.

They’re getting plenty of milk. They’re two chubby healthy, very active kittens their fur is all soft and super fluffy. I’ll upload pics of them in a wee bit.

After all that, I guess we answered your question about kits not wanting much wet food.

What an adorable kit! I hope we get to see them as our Daily Kittens soon.

Hi Alysha, you are lucky you have such a good kitty mama. They don’t need much of anything now, as their mama knows best. You can feed your mama cat wet food, they will watch her and figure out what to do. You can also leave dry food out like kitten chow (it’s good for mama too) with a little warm water on it, or formula to moisten it because it’s so hard they could choke. Mama may eat that too, but when they are ready, they will start eating it on their own. Especially once they leave their nest and start exploring.
