My 3 month old kitten Lacey is recently not going to the bathroom in her litter box. We realised she was going on a mat, so we cleaned it and hid it away. Now, we realise she is barely going to the washroom and when she does it is hard like little balls, not like a full line of poop… I believe she may be constipated. Has anyone had this before??
Is there any home remedies I can do to help her? She is on the food ” Nutrience”

    Kate Lynn welcome to TDK.
Here is a great link on constipation – http://dailykitten.com/chat/topic/chaos-guide-to-constipation/

Hi Kate Lyn, I would probably try and get her to a vet. I recently saw a “My Cat from Hell” episode where a cat went outside the box and he had a problem in his bowel, which of course I can’t remember what it was. He was in pain and uncomfortable and when a cat is like this, it tends to make them *go* just wherever. His problem went on for a very long time. Try buying her some goats milk in the cooler section or the baking aisle at WalMart. It’s great for constipation problems with kittens and will not bother her like cow’s milk. Let us know what you find out.

lacey meowed then went to go in the litter box and walked out into my closet, in fear she would go there i moved her out of the closet she then ran downstairs and pooped in her ” area she likes to go in”
it was first on a rug, but now it is just in a corner. not sure what i can do for litter training…. i am going to try the goats milk. do you know how much i should give her? doesnt milk give kittens worms?

    thanks.

Hey Kate-Lyn 🙂 . Great links MS.. Kittyzee is right goats milk yogurt /milk is very good for kittens with tummy issues .. Milk does not give cats worms .. As long as it’s pasteurised milk ( all store bought milk is)

Cats shouldn’t have cows milk because most cats are Lactose intolerant and this is why you hear “no milk for cats” but goats milk and sheep milk is lactose free and an excellent addition to a kittens diet..

Sounds like she is badly constipated.. Like kittyzee said this is why she is not going in the litter tray she is associating the litter tray with pain this is why she is crying when she poops its causing her discomfort. If she is on dry food switch to wet and make sure she has access to fresh water the wet food should loosen up her stool… Dehydration is the leading cause of constipation and dry food just sucks up the moisture in a cats system so when eating dry they need LOTS of fresh water.. Other wise you’ll have the poop your describing small hard pellets ..

You can also give her some Veg oil ( 5mls or so twice a day until normal poop resumes)

Also tinned pumpkin ( not pie filler) is very good at helping relieve constipation..

Main thing to insure that this doesn’t happen again is to hydrate.. If you have her on wet food make sure to add some water to the food cats tend to drink less water when eating wet because it has a high moisture content anyway so I always add a little extra water to be safe 🙂

That episode of MCFH kittyzee it was IBS ( irritable bowl syndrome) that cat had and a wet food diet helped him a lot..

Aw, poor kit. Here are a few more helpful links for past chat/link on same topic:

Good info from Buttons. Yup always add a bit of water to my kits wet food too. Helps in warm weather too for dehydration if your
cat doesn’t like to drink water!
