I moved out of my dad’s a few weeks ago, taking my inside female Cali with me but leaving behind Casper my tom who was a barn cat. He did not do well without me there, he started loosing weight so today I went and picked him up and brought him to my house. Any tips on how to help him adapt to indoor life?

have him neutered immediately. the removal of his hormones will help prevent spraying, it will also quiet his urge to roam, and he will be a much more mellow boy…

Just remember that the hormones may not be gone immediately. Good luck with Casper, and bless you both.

Is he at home with the litter tray? He may prefer dirt in it rather than litter at first, if not. If you do go for litter, picking up his poop and putting it in there to show him where he’s supposed to go (and maybe sprinkling Cat Attract on top of the tray if he doesn’t seem to be getting it) should help. One litter tray per cat plus one extra is a good rule.

Oh he is neutered. Even our outside cats were always fixed. He hasn’t been potty yet but he has used a litter pan before, he got hit by a car when he was younger and broke his leg so he was inside for about a month. He’s doing ok, exploring and hissing at Cali, who he’s being reintroduced to. Kinda wish he’d potty though lol.

You may need to treat him/both for fleas before have a house full of them. Get some DE as a preventative measure & sprinkle around! Good luck! (My Crockey is a tomcat and was a feral so it was an on-going chore to keep him from trying to jump thru the screen door/windows during the Summer! He finally did mellow out but still likes to go outdoors on a leash.)

Hi Kit and welcome to TDK! Has Casper been tested for FIV/Felv? (Feline aids and leukemia) If he is positive he could expose Cali to those diseases. If he has been tested and is negative there is a product in Petsmart called Feliway that seems to calm cats down, you can buy it as a spray or diffuser. The diffuser is preferred although it’s a little more expensive as it has a more even distribution.

If you are having trouble getting him to drink try putting ice in his water or adding a little tuna juice to it. If you can get him to drink hopefully he will potty for you and settle down.

Let us know how it goes OK? 🙂

Yes he’s getting his bath when I get done with work, though he doesn’t know it yet lol. He’s doing ok so far but just had a minor spat because he got in Cali’s Kat Kube and that didn’t fly lol Gotta go to Wally world I suppose and buy another.

minor set back, he just peed on some of my clothes that were in the floor. Luckily not the ones I just took home to wash (we have no washer or dryer yet) I put him in the room with the litter box (a huge sun porch) and closed the door moving Cali’s box into the house. Not sure what else to do there until he can be trusted to roam.

Cas had all his tests/shots when I got him. I say barn cat because he lived in the barn outside but all our cats are fixed and have all their shots and tests. He’s drinking and eating and obviously eliminating but we just need to work on where apparently lol. He got his bath today and is deflead now as well. Probably should worm him too I bet…
