Last night, my cat gave birth to 4 new kittens. While she was giving birth, I noticed that she don’t clean her babies and doesn’t care if she steps on them and hurt her kittens. So I helped her clean them up. After the last kitten, she didn’t remove it’s sac then just ran away and went outside our house.

Few hours later, I tried to make her feed her babies, but she aggressively hissed at them. I left the kittens overnight to see if she come but she didn’t. The kittens just sleeps and feels very cold. I don’t know if this is normal and it’s making me worry.

Is it really true that if you put a human scent on the kittens, the mother will reject them? Is my kittens alright? How can I make their mother to take care of them?

The mother shouldn’t be rejecting them like that because you touched them, but they do need to eat and be kept warm. Here’s some information about how to care for them in the mean time: http://www.messybeast.com/handrear.htm

If you’re not able to do it long term I’d call your local humane society and vets offices so they can put you in touch with someone that knows how to foster kittens that young.

No, it’s not normal. I’m wondering if the kittens are in a heavy traffic area of the house — a small room by themselves, where no one comes in unless absolutely necessary or just to check on the kittens, might make Mama feel less stressed out.

But you need to start feeding the kittens yourself and make sure they’re warm enough if she doesn’t come back and start feeding them pretty quickly or they won’t survive. Kit, you beat me to it with the messybeast site!

Kit, It’s looks really hard. Newborns are really delicate and prone to diseases. I also read that mother cat’s milk will help them to survive. I’m scared that they have only a little chance of surviving 🙁

Jcat, I made them a house made of box that only have 2 windows and a little door but the cat always avoids the kittens when she sees them. I don’t have any heating pad to make them warm, can you suggest any substitutes?

You must be so worried and stressed Aye. I used a rubber hot water bag filled with boiling water and then wrapped my sweater to regulate the heat. I’ve seen people heat hot water bottles too and use that after wrapping in soft cloth.

If mama cat is not feeding the kittens then suggest kitten milk replacement formula and if not available then there’s recipes for substitutes on the link that Kit shared. I brought my kitten up on human baby formula as KMR etc not available where I live. Just double the formula strength. Hope this helps. They need to be fed every 3 hours at least the first few weeks of their lives.

Like I said don’t be afraid to call the vet and ask for help. I do fostering and I get calls directly from vets offices, then I come and take the kittens for people so they don’t die. Local humane societies usually have people trained to do this. It’s ok to say “This is out of my league”, there’s nothing to be ashamed of, it’s doing the best you can for your kittens.

Another way to make a heating pad, warm a wet washcloth in the microwave for 30 seconds, put it in a sandwich bag and put that under a towel. Yet another way is to fill a sock with rice and heat that for about a minute, then wrap it in a towel. That will put off heat longer, but kittens must eat, they will die within a day without food from dehydration.

After this immediate crisis is past and care for the kittens has been provided, the mother cat really needs to be spayed to keep this from happening again.
