Hello everyone, I posted a few days ago (or yesterday?) about my kitten Lola looking a little underweight. Sooo, *update*
I have taken her to the vet for her first appointment, and everything is totally fine. The vet said she seemed fine, and that she is a normal weight for her age. He also cleaned her ears, he said there was no discharge or inflammation and that if her ear itching gets worse or persists to call him and he will give me some ear drops.
She had her first round of vaccinations and was de-wormed.
He then suggested we feed her Healthy Advantage kitten food. Which is apparently only available to purchase at the vet, and is $20 a bag, and it’s a rather small bag. he gave me a free bag to try it out and see if Lola likes it, but she will literally eat anything. Soo, of course before I found out how expensive the food was, I mixed some of it with Lola’s current food and she scarfed it. So now do I feed her only the new food once she’s use to it, or can I keep her on Whiskas as well? Do cats need to eat only one kind of food? $20 for a small bag of cat food is insane and I really wish he had of told me how expensive it was. That’s why the first one is “free” -___-

Anywho, since we got back from the vet Lola has been very whiney and itching a little bit. I’m wondering if maybe the de-worming cream is making her itchy. Other than that,
I am so relieved that she is healthy, I was probably more nervous than she was.
Also, she’s not mad at me anymore!

Hi Cheyanne – yay for a good checkup! Adorable pic – relaxing by mama! Note: if her poop gets a bit loose, it’s from the dewormer, no biggie.
Personally, I don’t see why kitties have to eat the same food. I have a friend who doesn’t have two dimes to rub together so she gets what’s on sale and her kitties are fine. However, getting “the really good stuff” might be good for a growing baby. You could alternate, since Whiskas is good too (in my opinion). Keep in mind that cats are indeed finicky and Lola might end up telling you what she wants!
Keep an eye on the scratching – it’s probably nothing though. After injections, some kitties feel tired for a day or two, others not so much! What you want to watch for is anything that looks like an allergic reaction within 24 hours, which is rare.

Hi. She’s adorable! I love black kitties! Vets, though usually wonderful, good hearted animal lovers, will try to sell you what they sell at their practice. I would be very leery of that. I’d save your money and buy as much canned food to add to Lola’s diet as you are able. (Love her name…makes me sing Copa cabana.) Canned food has more of the meaty nutrition cats need. Even budget friendly brands of canned foods like Friskies can be better for your cat than the most expensive dry food. When I got my first cat I googled “canned food vs dry” and just started reading…quickly became convinced that I needed to add as much canned food as I could. Good luck!

I found a good website about cat nutrition on http://www.catinfo.org There is a lot of information here, take your time and read it and make your own decision. I was especially shocked at the information on Hill’s Science Diet, which I had fed to one of my cats for UTI’s only finding out that I probably did her no favors. All of my cats eat wet food now, just Friskie’s, what I can afford or a special treat every now and then of some more expensive wet food from the pet store. I try and remind myself that more expensive isn’t necessarily better. By the way, Lola is a darling!

Thank you so much everyone! and kittyzee the link was very helpful!
She eats whiskas dry and wet food every day and I think what I’m going to do is keep her on the whiskas because not only is it a good price, but it is full of protein and the only low price brand that makes kitten food. But I’m going to mix in the fancy vet food with her food every few days so she still gets the nutrition.
