So today I was looking online at the different shelters in our area, and on one of the sites somebody had posted about four kittens they were giving away. The first picture I seen was of this gorgeous calico with very unique markings. So of course, I called the number and she was the only one left. So my boyfriend and I jumped in the car and drove an hour away to the country at 10:00 pm to get her. She is so sweet, and so calm. And i’m already head over heels for her. The only problem i’m having of course, is Lola. I put the carrier on the ground with the kitten in it, and Lola immediately came over and started hissing and growling. and it’s gotten so much worse. I have to keep the new kitten in a puppy crate because Lola keeps trying to attack her. I tried putting the kitten in a seperate room but she kept crying very loudly so I put her back in the crate with the blanket she came with on a pillow. Lola will approach the cage without hissing now and then, but the last few times she’s tried reaching in the cage and hitting the kitten, and of course she’s absolutely terrified. This is an absolute nightmare and I feel like a mother lion trying to protect her cub and its so hard to not get mad at Lola. And she’s even attacked me a couple of times and my hands are covered in cuts from trying to pull Lola away from the kitten.
Am I doing something wrong? I don’t want Lola to hate me, or the new kitten.
I feel like such a terrible meow mommy right now and I just want to cry. I can’t even go near Lola or she hisses at me. 🙁 Does anybody have some sort of advice?

Update: right now she is sleeping on top of the kittens crate. Is this a good sign, or is she trying to keep an eye on dinner?

Oh, I guess I should attach some photos. By the way, we’ve named our little calico princess, Jillian. Jilly Bean seems to be a very catchy nick name for her.

It can take a couple weeks with kittens before they accept each other. It’s even longer for older cats.

Get a shirt you’ve worn and rub it all over the new kitten then all over Lola. Do that back and forth a few times. That gets everyone’s scent all passed around.

Get whatever kind of treats Lola likes best and put one beside the cage with the new kitten in it. Not too close, maybe a foot or two away. If Lola eats it without hissing, put the next one a little closer.

Make sure that you don’t feed Jilly when you aren’t feeding Lola. You don’t want to do anything that makes Lola think Jilly is going to threaten the food supply.

She’s very cute, especially her little black nose.

Right now Lola is sleeping right beside Jilly’s crate and now and then she will open her eyes and they’ll stare at each other and go back to sleep. Lola woke up once and growled but she fell asleep a few seconds later.
Earlier I was giving Lola treats every time she went near Jilly’s crate without hissing. She even went in the crate when I took Jilly out to put her in the litter pan, and then she wouldn’t come out. Both kitties are peacefully sleeping in each others company about a foot away from each other. Jilly is still in her crate, of course but I feel like this is a good thing. I’m sure if Lola was really pissed off she wouldn’t be sleeping so close to me and the kitten.

also I was wondering, Jilly’s owner told me she was eating Royal canin wet food, but the only store that was open only sells friskies, so I got her a can of that just so she wouldn’t starve tonight. I’m going to get the Royal canin food for her tomorrow, but will friskies be okay just for now? I don’t want her to get a belly ache but I don’t want her to go hungry either.

Make a fuss over Lola, every time you see her, so she knows she’s not being replaced by a new cat. You have to ease into these things sloooowly, so keep them in separate rooms, maybe in a week or two, start feeding them on either side of the door, and so on and so forth. Lola has to basically learn that nothing in her life is going to change, even with a new kitten around. If this means locking the kitten alone for a while while you fuss over Lola, so be it. 🙂 Cats take about eight to nine months on average to get COMPLETELY comfortable with a newcomer, so no need to worry just yet.

Your new kitty is a cutie though!!

I tried the seperate room thing, but Jilly cried until I came back in. I wouldn’t mind sitting in there with her but its 5:30 am here and I’m exhausted. She’s in the crate at the end of my bed so that I can make sure she doesn’t feel alone, but now and then Lola will come over and growl and swat at her through the bars. a little while ago they were smacking a toy mouse back and fourth but im not sure if lola was playing, or if she just wanted her toy back. I’m going to put Jill back in the “safe” room tomorrow morning.

Is Lola fixed? Spayed females sometimes have some territory issues, I’ve heard. But sounds like they’re well on their way to a happy ending. ????

Sorry, no advice CM, but have to say OMG Jilly’s cute!!!! As is Lola, of course! Please give her a kiss on her velvety black nosie for me. And I hope that the more experienced TDKer’s can help you out, as per the tips MM has already provided. PS. Love Jilly’s name as name of main character in one of my fave author’s novels as Jilly Coppercorn. Character is an artist and kit lover who helps out ferals and books are magic realism (urban magic) genre set in fictional city of Newford, which is actually based on Ottawa, ON. 🙂

I gave her your kiss kz, plus a few more. She’s sleeping in the cat carrier next to me with her little paws wrapped around her face. And what is that book called? It sounds like something i’d definitely be interested in reading. I’m very picky when it comes to books, I often find myself wandering aimlessly around libraries and I usually leave empty handed because I never know what kind of book i’m looking for.
And I named her after Gillian Owens, Nicole Kidmans character in Practical Magic, my favorite movie.

And MM, she is not spayed just yet. I’m hoping to get Lola and Jill spayed at the same time. I am praying for a happy ending, however Lola is very interested and curious about Jilly, which I’ve heard is a good sign. I made a terrible mistake trying to play with both of them while Jill was outside of her carrier, and Lola hit her a few times. I won’t be doing that again until I know Lola is ready.

Actually it’s KJ, but a kiss is a kiss! Rather than provide you with a mega-huge list, here’s some links to Charles de Lint and bkgd. First book that I read is not about Jilly but takes place in Cornwall, UK. It’ called “The Little Country” and on my personal list of best books – ever! I’ve read just about all of his books/collections and his talent amazes me. You can find his books in most any library (I’m not into buying books unless I plan to re-read). Probably under SF/Fantasy, sometimes under Fiction.

(The Newford Stories might be good starting point)

PS I am not his agent LOL! And if you ever want any other recommendations in same genre I’m your grrl! Authors you might want to seek out are John Crowley, Robert Holdstock and Terri Windling. And if your tastes veer towards mystical tradition/esotercism, any fiction by Dion Fortune (not as easy to find, but also read them all). Or Google mentioned authors and read book descriptions, that’s what I do before heading off to library. 🙂

I’ve never thought of googling before heading to the library. I probably should because it’s really embarrassing going up to the counter and being like “hi i’m looking for um, um.. fictional, books about cats and magic with a mid october setting” and then they look at me like i’m crazy. So it would be much easier to just tell them what book i’m looking for.
Thank you for the links Kj*
