I want to kill my darling wee pussycat. I can’t seem to get her to stop clawing at this (farmhouse) antique. I don’t want to hit her, and never have, but I yell at her and she goes on doing this until I quite rudely drag her away (and now that the snow is melted, toss her out on the balcony). I have bought scratching posts and let her scratch other things. I love her, but don’t want to live in squalor!

Why oh why do cats tend to scratch the very thing we don’t want them to? When I acquired my aunt’s sofa, (in purrfect condition, since it was a little old lady sofa) the cats clawed it every chance they got, completely ignoring the 30 year old couch on the other wall.
I’m not sure if double-sided tape would mess with the finish of the table. Cat supposedly hate citrus, so you could try a lemon-water spray or something along those lines. Thing to note, however, is that not all cats hate citrus; Shaddo never had a problem scratching on stuff I sprayed with citrus, and Comet never leaves the Christmas tree alone even when I put orange peels around the base.

Thanks, I really don’t know what to do. I was in tears at her destroying one of my best pieces of furniture. I’m not “into” acquiring goods, but I don’t want to live in a sewer and never be able to invite guests either.

I’m sorry. Do get some double sided tape and put it on the legs of your table. Cats don’t like the feel of sticky on their paws. That sounds like a beautiful antique so I hope this works.

I’ll do that. I feel terribly guilty for shouting at her (she is a tiny little cat) but she doesn’t seem to hold it against me or avoid cuddling up to me or sleeping with me.

It’s possible Livia thinks this is a game. It’s a quick and easy way of getting your attention. Putting the tape on and not paying attention when she does try to scratch could break this cycle. You’re her meowmy and she wuvs you, Lagetta.
