Hi everyone! About thirty minutes ago, my 5mo old kitten Yoshi (male) walked into his litterbox, let out two long howl-type meowing sounds and then left his litterbox. He did not go to the bathroom, though. He has had long meowing conversations with me while he goes to the bathroom, where he meows and I make a noise back. Any ideas/answers? Thanks.

    More info:
He is a very active kitty and eats normally. He is quite rough sometimes.

Sarah, this thought popped into my mind: does he eat only dry kibbles? He may be in pain, some cats howl/whine when urinating if they have a UTI. Sometimes dry food in males causes crystals in the bladder which are very painful, which could also lead to infection. You may want to get him to a vet to be checked out just in case. Check out this website: http://www.catinfo.org Lots of info here, but if you do some scrolling you will find information on male cats and UTI’s. Hope this helps…keep us informed on your kitty!

He eats dry food once in the morning, a spoonful of Friskies wet food around noon, and I put more dry food in his bowl before I go to sleep.

Also, his dry food is IAMS ProActiv for kittens. He constantly has a large bowl of cold water next to his kibble.

    Hi Sarah
Generally I think if your cat is trying and not able to use the litter tray it’s not a good sign.
It can be UTI/Kidney/Liver problems but also could mean he’s blocked his system with something (string, feather, toy etc.!)

Did you notice if he tried to use it or if he was sniffing around and exploring?

Also, was the litter box more or less clean then usual?

Mine have started to meow outside if the tray hasn’t been cleaned especially recently, and they know they’ve trianed me now to change it if they want so sometimes meow and wait, even if it’s not very dirty (in my opinion!)

Anyway, if it continues a visit to the vet may well be in order. The vet will need to help you play detective unless you have limitless resources to test for everything!

No. I don’t think he was using it, as he had already used it around an hour before or so. I had just deep cleaned it and refilled it, so he could have thought that it smelled funny or something. He can use the litter box properly and is a fairly healthy cat. I will be taking him to my county animal services for his set of Rabies/FVRCP shots sometime soon, so I could maybe have them check then.

He can use the litter box properly and is a fairly healthy cat and never show any signs of discomfort. I lightly pressed down on his stomach area to see if he was feeling okay, and he didn’t do anything. UPDATE: He meowed twice again and actually went but it was #2. Is that still a possible problem?

    Is that specifically in males?
