Off topic here, but Leeny, I really do understand how you feel about Halloween now. It seems so silly and – ghoulish, ghastly, horrible!

…two very close family members of mine were killed by drunk driver a few days ago. The funeral is on Halloween. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to stand the day.

    Oh, my condolences IT.
My brother passed in late October & was cremated on Halloween awhile ago. For a few years I did not celebrate Halloween.
Than decided it was a way of celebrating his life as tribute on day revered as Day of Dead by several cultures too. (Rick had a quirky sense of humor & did enjoy Halloween growing up as a kid too!)

My condolences to you, Indie. Death isn’t fun when the real thing invades your life.

It’s even worse for me this year than it has been in the past because my divorce became final on October 31, 2012.

I know that people talk about the history of Halloween, what ancient people did on that day, and the negative significance of their activities. I never can remember any of that. It just seems clear to me where a holiday that celebrates death and fear comes from.

Just a few more days now, and I won’t have to look at my neighbors’ fake tombstones and plastic bones for another year.

Again, Indie, I’m sorry about your loss.

I was told my youngest brother wouldn’t live (from a car accident) on Valentines Day and he died two days later. For a few years the sight of valentine’s decorations was painful. Now I don’t notice them but always think of my brother.

Cat talk rules: thank you. Maybe one day, in the future, I will feel that way, but right now, it’s just so fresh.

Jeankit: hopefully I will see it that way one day. I think right now, it is just too soon.

    Buttons: thank you.

Leeny: that is just how I feel right now. I know about Dia de los Muertos, and yesterday I walked through a historic Hispanic neighborhood, and the decorations just seemed ghoulish and bizarre, and hurtful. There’s an apartment across from mine with a growing red Jack-O-lantern that’s left on all night – I hate it!
Stay strong, it will be over in a couple more days and the decorations will come down.

I feel sorry about all these mentioned losses. I do not celebrate Halloween, Xmas and many other holidays, but have a calendar-ful of religious holidays that I do celebrate. My take is to respect what others choose to do and expect to be respected in kind. That said, the emotional/memories issue I completely understand. So all I can say is be good to yourselves. It’s not much, but hope in some small way that it helps.

I’m so sorry for your loss, indie tea. Losing loved ones is never easy, no matter what day it occurs on, and to have such a visible reminder must just make it worse. Any Lenny, I’m sorry for your pain as well. May a measure of peace find you both, Jeankit, CatTalkRules, and all of us who need comfort.

Leeny you need to remember the wonderful choice of living you made–that anniversary is bittersweet, but you need to remember you loved yourself enough to SAVE yourself.

Indie my condolences, that will be an extremely difficult day, my thoughts are with you.
