I have three kittens that I have been raising by hand since they were a few days old. They are now about 12-13 Days old. I was feeding them powdered KMR which made them very constipated. Only one of the kittens pooped in the span of 5 days. They are now eating liquid KMR. I switched their food they seemed to be thriving. I was able to get a poop out of all of them within the next 24 hours. But now all of them have serious diarrhea. They do not seem lethargic at all. They try climbing out of their box and up onto my shoulders, which seems like a good thing. I have started mixing the liquid formula with 1 part pedialyte and 2 parts liquid formula. They seem to be pooping less, but it is still diarrhea and i am still very concerned. I have found two accidents in the last 24 hours in their box. It gets everywhere. Their poop is yellowish and very watery. It also smells awful, almost like rotavirus in children. What do I do? Should I take them into the vet tomorrow? Can they do anything with them being so young?

Very watery poop, if it lasts any length of time, is something to be concerned about; it depends on your vet whether he or she will want to do anything, them being so tiny. If it’s bacterial the vet may want to give them antibiotics but also may think they’re too young. The awful smell sounds like it might be coccidia or another parasite, but the vet may think they’re too young to treat, though I would hope not. If they’re too dehydrated, s/he can give them subcutaneous fluids. Changing their food can cause diarrhoea but I wouldn’t have thought it would be so drastic when you’re just changing from powdered KMR to liquid. If it were me, I would take them to the vet to at least get them checked out for coccidia and/or a bacterial infection.

In the meantime, check this thread for links on diarrhoea and the tent test for dehydration: http://www.dailykitten.com/chat/topic/42629

    Best of luck.
