Tomorrow I will be getting my parent’s dog Samson for about two weeks. He is a 2 1/2 year old Maltese (little fluffy dog). I have had my 10 week old kittens for about two weeks now and they are only allowed in two rooms separate from the house. I would like for all three of my fur babies to be able to be in the same room peacefully since I spend the majority of my at home time in the same room as the kittens. Samson wouldn’t hurt a fly, but he has also never been around cats- more than anything I am afraid of my kittens playing too rough with my dog. They nip and claw each other which is fine, but because of Samson’s personality I could see him being miserable, scared and stressed by my two kitties. Any suggestions on how to introduce them and what to do if someone is being too rough would be fantastic!!! Thanks TDKers =)

Hi MB, do you have a cage that you can have between the kittens and Samson for their first meeting? It would make the first meeting a bit safer than them all just meeting up in the open or in your arms and you getting scratched up. If things go well then maybe you can move onto ‘getting to know you’ while they are being held. After that you can take things as you see fit depending on how it is going. If someone is being too rough a growly sounding “aaaahhh” and removing them from the situation for a while may help but until they all get quite used to each other you will have to keep an eye on them. I hope it goes really well. Also don’t forget to get each one some love and reassurance on a regular basis and praise when they are doing the right thing.

yeah I will try the cage thing first, I think if they absolutely can’t get along I will just have to let my dog wander in the rest of the house away from their room, though I’d rather not. =/ thanks for the reply

If you have a children’s gate, you can use that to close off a room without the door being shut. I think you will be surprised by the kittens attitude towards the dog especially if the pup is of the quiet nature.
