I have a 10 day old kitten who was abandoned by his momma and is the only surviving one of a litter of four. He has a swollen eye and pus is coming out. I called a vet and they said that since he is so young he can’t have medicine. I have been wiping his eyes gently with a warm wet q-tip and holding a warm wash cloth as a compress to try to bring out the pus. They vet said that’s pretty much all I can do at least for now. I was just wondering if anyone has had this happen with a kitten this young and if they did anything different than what i am doing. He’s had such a hard time between his momma abandoning him, constipation (which is no longer a problem thanks to everyone on here), and now his eye! Its killing me to see this lil guy suffer anymore problems so if anyone has any ideas please help!

Sounds like a bad case of feline herpes its very common and kittens contract the virus from the mother… You need to get L-lysine add it to the kitten formula its an amino acid and it inhibits the feline herpes virus to grow properly… I’ve given it to kittens as young as 2 weeks because its a natural occurs amino acid its impossible for a cat to overdose on it..

You can get it from any health food shop in tablet form simple crush a tablet form and sprinkle it on food or in milk bottle it should help with his overall eye health.. I’ll post one of my old links if I can find one it describes in more detail the great uses for L-lysine ..

Also cold tea (without milk) is great for eye problems, it’s soothing and antiseptic (and comes recommended by my vet). Bathing your little one’s eye in a cotton swab wrung out in cold tea will help. Best of luck.

Hi, does he have his eyes opened yet? If so, you need to open the eye and flush the puss out with saline solution. If there is too much buildup and pressure on the eye, it could damage his eye if not relieved. This happened with my cloud. I used warm water to help open his eye, and saline once it was open. I hope he feels better!

His eyes aren’t open yet. Found out his mom definitely has feline herpes. I bought some lysine 500 mg. Seems like most sources say to give kittens 250mg everyday. Can someone confirm this for me? I don’t want to give him too much or too little.

Also this is completely unrelated but does anyone have any cool ideas for a name? I’d like to name him something that means fighter or survivor or miracle since he is all of those. He’s had it rough and I want to find a strong name for him.

You can’t give him too much that’s the great thing about L-lysine because the body only takes what it needs and the excess is passed from the body through the urine… I would give him one 500 mg in morning and another in the evening for a few days and when he starts improving lower the dosage to one 500 mg tablet once daily..

Just make sure to crush the tablets into a fine dust and add to the kitten milk.

If he’s over the 10 day mark now I would maybe ask the vet to assist in opening his eyes as Chaos said he won’t do him any good to have an infection building behind his closed eyes the infection will never clear properly while his eyes are still shut.. and the worse the infection the harder it will be to open his eyes…

Try green tea or gently wipe Wyatt’s eyes with a cold moist green tea tea bag. Make sure it’s pure green tea or a black tea/green tea mix only. Green tea has healing properties.

My now 10 year old cat had feline herpes very badly as a 7 week old when we adopted her. We did a lot of nursing and carrying around of our kitty to keep her warm and feeling loved. Just take it all one day at a time.

Today morning while standing at the gate I saw a nice brown kitty strolling on the footpath. As it came upon the edge towards the road below, it didn’t stop, but when it its paws found nothing to step on, it retreated. I immediately sensed it cannot see. So I decided to take a closer look. I have two small cats of my own. And i saw its eyes were indeed shut.

Wondering if kittens too have eyes shut like pups, I googled. But when I saw its only in the first few days that the eyes are shut, i got suspicious. So I went back to the kitty and took a closer look by lifting it up. The eyes were shut with a gum or glue like substance it appeared. Then i took it home to see if anything can be done or perhaps i might take it to my vet. In the meantime I googled a bit more on this. And I found this page from dailykitten. The comments boosted my spirit to try cleaning its eyes and see. So with warm water and cotton, i gently rubbed on the closed eyes where the pus had dried out.

And indeed after a few minutes of gentle but thorough cleaning around the eyes the dried up pus gave away. But soon some more fresh pus appeared. It was quite scary never seen or attended a medical thing like this on a cat. But I kept on, having read all the comments here twice. Lo and behold, soon after a little more cleaning, a tiny speck opened in the eyes. And it was shining black, the eyes. So with some joy I did a little more cleaning. And eventually one eye opened, spotless clean. There was no more pus inside. After some time cleaing the other eye, it too opened up. It was a beauty and quite wonderfull to help the kitty have its sight back. I don’t have a picture yet but will post it by a day. Thanks everybody here for helping out the kitty get seeing the world.

But the concern is, its not really eating anything. So I fed it milk with a dropper I keep. I hope it comes around soon and regains appetite. I’m not sure if it will stay with me and join the company I already have, or perhaps I might set it where it was in a few days.

I saw just recently that a mild salt water solution helps to clear and clean the eyes also. Room temperature water. Try giving some goat’s milk–you can find it at the grocery as cow’s milk is not good for cats as most of them are lactose intolerant, and cow’s milk contains lactose. It’s wonderful that you have helped this little cat, she is surely grateful and her outcome would not be good without your care. Please come back and let us know how she is doing. A vet visit would probably help also. 🙂

The vet visit is tomorrow, saturday. Meanwhile, pus is accumulating in the kitty’s eyes. And now ive got saline to clean it off. the appetite is still lost and feeding is through a syringe (without needle). I’ll get goat’s milk. Is Cerelac fine to feed him/her. My other kitten lops it up in no time. BTW, i didn’t find a link to upload an image on the Reply box.

Tejash, I don’t know anything about Cerelac. If it’s a complete kitten milk replacer, it will most likely be okay. If your kitten should get constipated from it, add a little olive oil to the formula. Keep rinsing and wiping kittens eyes. The kitten may need a topical antibiotic ointment for the eyes or some kind of drops for them. Keep us posted!

Cerelac is the baby food powder from Nestle. I give him once a day. Olive oil good idea bec it gets constipated by milk sometime. Other thing is it gets quite cold sleeping all the time. I’ve put a hot water pouch with it and warm clothes though. And it keeps sleeping whole day. I wonder why. Ill see the vet and see what he has to say or prescribe. Injections i hope not but im sure he will give some antibiotic injection as his habit.

Sorry to inform that its no more. I came home and found its already gone. Maybe i should have given him lots of honey to get glucose levels as it wasn’t taking any thing much. It had got cold earlier but I just couldn’t figure its so serious. And i put a hot water bag under it. It was quite a beautiful white kitten with golden marks. Maybe it was too young to cope anything although it looked larger. Thankyou for help.

It may be a little late for me to reply. But I hope it will help others who have similar problems. Just try Ofloxacin Ophthalmic Solution eye/ear drops. It worked for all my kittens with eye infection. 😀
