Hi all. I made this post a couple of days ago http://dailykitten.com/chat/topic/litter-of-kittens-slowly-getting-sickdying/. This post is about the surviving kitten. It seems she has a very hard time falling asleep. The last 4 days have been pretty bad for her: losing momma, being on her own for at least 2 days with rest of the litter, then losing the rest of her siblings (reasons in attached link). She has only slept a couple of times, and only for short amounts (2 hours has been the longest I’ve seen her sleep). She is so tired-red rimmed eyes, laying down, etc. she just can’t seem to actually fall asleep comfortably. We wear her out with exploring and play, have a stuffed animal that we can warm up for her, and a heat reflective blanket, but she just won’t sleep! Does anybody have an idea what’s wrong and how we can help? She may be depressed and lonely Most likely we will be taking her to the vet again to get some ideas, but I would love to hear from anybody on this site. Also: she is about 6 weeks old and on a diet of stage 2 milk mixed with some recovery diet wet food.

Hi Kara. She just needs time to adjust to not having a pile of siblings to lay with and keep her warm. Have you thought of putting her in bed with you and letting her snuggle up against you? She is 6 weeks old now, and you could put her litter box in the room with you and a chair or something where she could go up and down from the bed to the floor. She needs lots of love and extra attention, warmth and cuddles, and she should be fine. Have you tried the goat’s milk instead of the formula? It works really well for kittens and all stages of a cats’ life. Keep us posted on what the vet says too.

So vet says there’s not much they can do. What she’s experiencing is most likely psychological. She has gained some weight and temp is normal. I feel like I have tried everything. Her condition has gone down a bit. She still won’t sleep and now she breathes very fast, almost panting but with her mouth closed and the tip of her tongue sticking out. She has been out of her cage all day, very lethargic, but she does lay on me. I just don’t know what to do. I’m afraid we will lose her too. We have been force feeding her just to make she she doesn’t get dehydrated.

Kara, have you thought of taking her to another vet? I’m afraid I have to disagree with the vet about it being psychological. When a cat kitten can’t sleep, fast breathing, tongue sticking out–there is something physical going on. She may have a URI that could be helped with antibiotics. An x-ray would determine if she has fluid in her lungs or stomach cavity. I would keep feeding her as that’s about all YOU can do, unless you can access another vet.

I had thought about bringing her to a new vet. we have seen this vet for many years with all of our cats, so we trust her a lot, but were questioning her opinion on this one. We were so scared to lose Mitzi. I stayed awake with Mitzi the whole night 2 days ago and she just got worse and worse. We brought her back to the same vet that morning at about 4 am. The vet checked her over, temp and breathing. She gave the same prognosis- psychological. So she asked us if she could keep Mitzi at the clinic, give her a nice quite place to just be away from humans for a little bit. Lo and behold she was right. It was psychological. Mitzi is still probably a little feral even though she tolerates our handling and even snuggles sometimes with us. It’s insane what happens to the body when mental trauma happens. I have never seen a cat do a complete 180 before this fast. She’s back to playing and running around. When she sleeps, we make sure it’s alone and very quiet for her. Thank you for your help, for you confirmed my fears and helped me do what we thought was right (snuggling with her and giving her lots of love). I think she’s gonna be alright now 🙂
