Thank you so much Chelsea and Tzeetzee’s mama :). After a VERY long weekend I’m thrilled to say they are now eating on their own. WHOOP WHOOP!!!! I must have looked up every website available and every video on youtube to get the feeding right. They certainly weren’t fond of it but when I started to relax so did they. Feline parvovirus is also know as feline distemper, maybe that rings a bell? It’s the first thing kittens are vaccinated against. They’ve been to the vet everyday and incredibly Mona gained 100gs over night and Karl gained 200gs. The vet had to double check his weight and couldn’t help but laugh. He’s being very conservative about their chances but is thrilled they’re gaining weight.

Karl is still very small but he only got fluids tonight and Mona didn’t need anything expect for a pet from him :). Tomorrow is public holiday here so if they get sick over night I can bring them in but otherwise we can wait until Thursday. If they’ve gained weight by Thursday then they won’t need any treatment. My fingers are crossed because I paid a shocking bill this evening so let’s hope they keep eating :).

Basically until they both reach 2kg and Karl’s diarrhea stops the vet won’t be 100% happy (he’s nervous about giving them the all clear until that point).

To Tzeetzee’s Mama, I’m relieved to say that they haven’t held the assist feeding against me and do come to me as soon as I sit on the sofa. Your posts have amazing, thank you so much for all the support!

The saga continues :). I’ll keep you posted. Thanks guys!!!

I should add that felline parvovirus/distemper cannot be treated in that there’s no special medicine that’ll cure it. Instead the vet can only treat the symptoms and give them fluids against dehydration and antibiotics to stop septicemia (not sure of the spelling). It’s a big killer but if they survive then they have a life long resistance to it. It’s nasty stuff!

Aw yesss, well done on the feeding, that’s GREAT news they took to it and are now eating by themselves. It’s awesome that you managed to keep calm, I know it can be hard when you’re desperate to get some food in their bellies. Good job!

Keeping my fingers crossed they continue being the little fighters they are, please give them lots of cuddles for me. Would love to see their pics, if you have some time to put a couple online 🙂

KarlMona, we are all keeping our fingers crossed for your little ones and sending loads and loads of the TDK white light and healing energy to them. Feline parvovirus is also known as panleukopenia and can cause cerebellar hypoplasia (cerebral palsy for cats) in unborn kittens when their mum is exposed to the virus when pregnant. My little Millie has CH (these little ones are also known as ‘wobbly’ or ‘spastic’ cats). It is a nasty, nasty virus but many cats do recover and I hope your little ones do too. You may find this info helpful (the first two leaflets are very good):

Once again, thank you so much for all the support! Both have continued to eat on their own (in fact they’re constantly eating, ha ha). Mona is almost at the 2kg mark and Karl is now 1,620 grams which is huge compared to his 740 grams during the bad days. They’re off all treatment and once nothing major happens this weekend they only have to go to our vet’s next week for a check up. Karl still has diarrhea but he’s had it for over seven weeks so it’ll take some time to clear up. It is showing signs of improvement-whoop whoop. I didn’t want to take any photos of them before now just in case… It would have been too painful to see them. Forgive the photo but I found them on top of my washing pile and took the opportunity to get a photo of them together The towels they’re sitting on are now theirs as after the incontinence I just felt it better to buy us new ones :). Thanks again!

I should add that Karl is on the left and Mona is on the right. I’ll put up a better photo of them soon. Happy days!!!

JCAT thanks for the links, they’ve been very helpful! Karl has a tremor in his back leg and sometimes it makes him look like he’s under the influence :). Generally it’s not extreme and he can still run around so if that’s the only side affect then that’s fine. I’m just grateful that he’s still alive! I hope Millie isn’t too badly affected by CH! Thanks again.

Hey everyone, crazy question but have any of your cats eaten kitty litter? I saw Karl doing it on Saturday night. He only ate a little before I moved him away from it. I have two types of litter because one cat prefers one over the other (divas). I emptied his one because it has to be dangerous and filled it with Mona’s kind. He licked it then shook his head so I don’t think he likes the other one and I haven’t seen him eating it since. We’re going to the vet tonight for their check up or tomorrow morning at the latest and I can ask him then. Hopefully he’s just being curious and doesn’t have some weird habit (I’ll see him trying on my high heels next). Also, is it possible to buy non-toxic kitty litter? I know it’s bizarre but he is eating normally and is always being offered food so I don’t think it’s because he’s hungry.

Hi everyone, it’s been a few weeks and I’m pleased to say that both kittens are eating like tigers and playing non-stop. Karl still has very loose diarrhea though but it’s slowly gaining weight. The vet prescribed him Canikur. Does anyone have any experience with this? It’s normally for dogs but cats also respond well with it. The problem is that he hates the stuff and backs away from the bowl (we’ve to crush a half tablet and mix it with water) so I’m back to my old enemy the syringe. Because his diarrhea is chronic and not acute he is allowed to eat but we’ve to leave a few hours between the medicine and food. My question is this: has anyone experienced their cat having even more watery diarrhea while taking this medicine? We’ve to ring the vet in the morning because he asked us to give it a couple of days to let it work. Other then the diarrhea being worse he’s doing great. Also because it’s so clear I’m wondering if the rest of the poop is waiting to come down and all he can manage is a little watery squirt (I’m so sorry for being so graphic but I want to describe it clearly). Does anyone have any advice on how to make the tablet more appealing (I can’t mix it with food) or have any of you used another tablet or paste that your cats ate on their own? Sorry for all the questions but as always all suggestions are very welcome. 🙂

Just popping in, I’m so glad that things are going okay for Karl. Maybe not the most pleasant, but quickest way to have him take the medicine, is to water it down and squirt it in his mouth with a syringe… He’ll get used to it 🙂

Thanks Tzeetzee’s Mama, unfortunately that’s what we have to do – he hates it but the vet is sure that it’ll work. He has special food that’s for sensitive stomachs so hopefully both with work and he’ll have his very first normal poop. I’m definitely going to take a photo of it when it happens but my husband has put a veto on my plans to frame it (the photo I mean). He’ll only have the syringe until Monday night (three times a day though) and then we’ve to wait until Wednesday before we ring the vet again. If it hasn’t improved by then there’s another powder he can have but the vet seems confident this’ll work. The nicest thing is that the vet is calling him ‘his little success story’ and says that the diarrhea is just something that we’ve to wait out but he’s not sick anymore. Tomorrow we have them 3 months exactly and it’s been such a stressful time that I’m so looking forward to having ‘normal’ little tigers roaming around the apartment. I read over the last posts and the support has been incredible. Thank you so much!!!!
