    Hi,
My cat Oreo just had a litter of four kittens a little more than five weeks ago. Not too long after that she developed diarrhea. On Wednesday, the day the kittens turned 5 weeks, we took her to the vet. We told him about it and that she was still nursing but we were trying to wean them. Anyway, he gave her a cortisole shot and perscribed Albon. I gave her her first two doses and then noticed that the smallest kitten had some nasty smelling liquid poop. He is also a bit lethargic and seems a bit dehydrated. It is the middle of the night and I have to wait another 5 and a half hours till the vet opens. I am giving him some homemade pedialite. Is there anything I can do to help him? Did the Albon that his mother is on hurt him? If anyone has any advice or info, I would be very grateful.

I hope you got ahold of your vet to find out the proper treatment for your kittens. I’m going to post a link that explains a bit about this treatment, even though it talks about giving it to kittens. If he did a fecal test on the mother, he may have found that she had coccidosis, which is a one celled parasite that regular dewormer won’t cure as this is a one celled parasite that requires the use of a different medication. Giving your kitten pedialyte is great for preventing dehydration–try mixing it with it’s formula so he gets nutrition too. Keep us posted.

Thanks. We were able to get him in just after they opened. He and his three littermates probly got what moms got. He thinks it could be coccidosis. He hasnt examined moms fecal sample yet though. He put them all on a very small dose of Albon. He also gave him a shot like he gave mom. Maybe its wishful thinking on my part but he already seems happier.
